Personal branding questions

Do you understand what a personal brand is built to do?

It boils down to the story I am about to tell. The biggest question a self brand answers is, “Why should I do business with you?”

Many people know I spent five months in Allendale, South Carolina helping a friend I met on IBOtoolbox back in 2013. While I was there I made friends with many people. For the past almost two years I have been working with some of the people I met on IBOtoolbox in 2011. Most of us spent time together on Webinars during the time I was in South Carolina.

One of the people I already knew when I went there was James Lockett. My friend needed a way for the people of Allendale to earn pocket change. James came up with an idea and sent samples. This for the ones who needed this help, to use.

Instead of using the samples as they were meant to be used the person I went to help drank them. This was a good and a bad thing. The person had type two diabetes and went all summer without medication. When he ran out of samples his blood sugar shot to over 400, and he had to go back on medication. Sadly the people who were supposed to earn by selling the samples had to be taken care of another way. I remember many times getting up from my desk and making something for them to eat.

To this day I can't understand why he wasn't able put two and two together like I did. I knew the samples were why his blood sugar stayed low. When he should have been buying the product to maintain his blood sugar, he did nothing until his blood sugar spiked.

When I returned to Nebraska it was in the middle of the winter. The temperatures in South Carolina had been between the lower 50's and mid 60's during the day and above freezing at night. In Nebraska the temperatures were -5 F at night and maybe +5 F during the day.

All my warm clothing was in storage so needless to say I got sick fast. I have no idea how many times I have used the phrase, “Everything a person needs to survive and thrive is available in nature.” Many people also know my grandmother was a healer. So when I needed something to make me well I called James Lockett.

He told me what he felt I needed and got me set up to get it. For a solid year I used what he recommended daily. It was the only thing I drank for that year. As it turns out that was the healthiest year of my life.

So where is this all leading?

Self branding includes the points below

  1. James showed that he truly cared for others

  2. He was the first person I thought of when I needed help

  3. He delivered a product that delivered on his promise

I felt I knew him because he wasn't afraid to pick up the phone to make or receive calls.

Fast forward to today

Today I picked up the phone and called him. He was the first person I thought of, even though I know others who carry the product I need to get healthy again. The concept with self branding is, “Am I the person who comes to mind when someone needs something I carry?”

So you have to ask why?

I guess number one is because his name and number have been programmed in every cell phone I have had since 2013. He has been considered a true friend since even before I had his phone number. Although we haven't been in constant contact, we have talked many times since 2013. This time it had been about a year since we talked. He remembered my voice and addressed me by name after all I said was. “Hi James”.

Self branding is not only the picture you show, and the posts you make. It is also how you treat people in emails, over the phone, and any other way of personal contact.

You have to ask yourself, in my self brand am I showing people who I really am? Am I afraid to pick up the phone and not try to sell someone? Can I become the someone people call, or reach out to, when they need or want what I carry?
