If you are an independent business owner, (IBO) you are building a brand. Everything you need to know to do this you learned in Kindergarten. I know this is a surprise to some people, read on, you will find it true.

Every person spends life self-branding

Every human being fits under the category of a brand. Individuality, what makes you different from other human beings is what sets you apart. This in reality is what branding is all about.  It is the act of setting yourself apart.

Where do you learn?

All successful online marketers I know started out by building friendships with other online business owners. No one knows everything, so you are going to have to spend time learning from more than one person. In school, you learn from the teacher and from other students.

Everything you need to brand you in business and life you learned in Kindergarten.

Treat others, as you want to be treated

Carefully consider how you want to be treated. Treat others this way and you will find those who have the same feelings and ethics you have. One of my friends can’t handle people who curse. You never hear or see a curse word come out of his mouth, pen, or fingers. He, some might consider takes this to an extreme because he refuses to continue to talk to people who use this kind of language. He does take the time to explain this and gives people a choice.

Create and value friendships

Children start building their tribes in kindergarten. One woman I know has maintained a friendship with two of her kindergarten classmates for over fifty years. This doesn’t happen without caring and commitment.  The only benefit she receives is keeping in touch with people she has known most of her life.


Did you learn?

Was one of the things you learned the ability to put two letters together to create a word? There is no question even today “content is king.” What you should have also learned is make content personal. People are not going to care about you unless you are there, to show them who you are and what you stand for. In early life, this is done verbally because the skills are not yet there to do otherwise.

You are not the center of the universe

There are times I have problems with this. In my case, I tell people I live in the middle of everywhere. At one point in time, the city I live in was the geographical center of the United States. The town they now consider the center of the U.S. is within 150 miles. In kindergarten, you are exposed to different types of people. You truly do learn you are not the center of the universe.


I don’t make conversations with others about me. This is because I want others to know I truly care about them. Without listening and responding with no a motive other than too truly help, then responding only to what I am hearing people wouldn’t know I care.


Tell the truth

In today’s world for kindergarteners, this is more at home, I believe than in school. One of the things I have heard often and also said quite a few times with the children here is you will get in less trouble if you tell the truth. In business, the truth is probably one of the most important things you can practice. Trust depends on it. In my circles, no one does business with people who haven’t taken the time to build trust.

Bullies if possible are avoided

As a business owner, if you are pushing sales you are considered a bully. This is one of the reasons sales numbers are so low for those who use an old style sales approach. Today the best approach is find out the needs of the person you are talking to; then show them how what you are offering is going to add value to their life.  


I know some of you are questioning this. How did you make new friends in Kindergarten? Some, however not all were approached directly. Friends of friends often became friends if your life was anything like mine. In my case, in the Kindergarten classroom this didn’t work. There was only one other child who spoke the same language. On the block, everyone spoke one of my early languages so I guess it still applies.



Why is sharing so important to a kindergartener and to you? Successful business owners have learned to share. How are others going to know you are better than your competition if they don’t see the competition. Coke® and Pepsi® have earned billions and both have done comparison tests. Sharing for non-competitors is all we can do. We stand alone in our field.  

There you have it

Everything you need to know is already inside you. You learned it all in Kindergarten. All you needed was a little reminder. Every kindergartener has all the knowledge needed for building a brand.
