What does a consulting company have to do with building a brand? Many people don’t realize a brand is only as good as how well it converts lookers into buyers. Brand (marketing) design isn’t about aesthetics, it is about how well it converts visitors into buyers. This doesn’t stop at the website. Everything a company does should all be aimed at creating buyers.


Years as a part owner in a construction company taught me many things. One is function wins over aesthetics. Does the rooms design perform the function as intended? Believe me there were times when home or business owners had some ideas that were way out there. If the room design didn’t fit the function it was my job to convince the owner there was a better way.

It is no different for business identities. The idea is to convert visitors into buyers. With a website or splash page, you generally have one shot at this. Since the majority of people don’t buy a first time, you want to give them a reason and a place to interact. Choices you can give them are, an interactive website, an opt in to an auto response system, entice them to your social media, have them email or call your company directly.  If a visitor can’t be reached again chances are they will buy from a competitor. It is important to realize if you can reach visitors again, you won’t have the opportunity to convince them you are going to fill a want or need for them.

Function is the most important area you should be dealing with as you are designing. Have you taken the time to research your audience? Is there any way you can create an emotional attachment with your audience? How are you going to reach them again? What is going to fill their needs?

Things to consider

Would you be better served by having several websites targeted to audiences in specific niches? Often sub niches provide the most targeted traffic. Can you use splash pages, which are sub niche specific? Splash pages are generally cost effective.  What can you do to create a value for which your audience has a need? If visitors perceive no need there is no reason for them to remain on your website or follow any of the options they are given. How can you provide something your competition is not? People have to have a reason to choose you over your competition.
