Building a brand; what is the goal of SEO?Lisech small logo

How many companies understand enough about Search engine optimization (SE0) to build their brand online? SEO is forever changing. How to you separate what works today from what worked years or weeks ago? What do Panda and Penguin mean to you? Do you understand what the changes do for website owners and writers?

“Even the best SEOs are not magicians. They can't simply place a site at the top of the engines when there are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of others that offer basically the same thing, and provide basically the same information. If they could, you'd see a whole lot more millionaire SEOs.” Jill Whalen

What is the goal of SEO?

The goal of search engine optimization is to be found on page one of as many search engines as possible. Of course, the one search engine everyone is concerned about is Google. Not all search engines use the same algorithm. What works for one might not put you on page one of another.

When you are optimizing a website, backlinks are important. Where is used to be the more you have the better it would be, this no longer holds true. According to Matt Cutts who heads the algorithm changes for Google, the first 25 are the most important. They should be the highest quality possible and work with your keywords.

How many people understand how search engines work?

Are you aware that on one person’s computer you can be on a page one the computer finds and page seven on the computer of another searching the same terms? For Google the only way to guarantee you are on a page one people will find is by adding them to your circles. Even this doesn’t guarantee success because your competitor may be in their circles too.

Where does this leave you?

The bottom line is you want people to find you. So how can you make this possible? The place to start is with keyword choice. Are people looking for what you do or offer, searching the keywords you chose? How much competition is there for the words you have chosen? Can you make your company stand out in the crowd?

Can pay per click help?

This is not recommended for enhancing keywords on the first page of a website. For the other pages, it can help as long as you aren’t paying someone to change your pages. When you use pay per click PPC it is important to keep track of your return on investment. (ROI) Many companies spend more money than for which they see a return.

What are other options?

Since you now understand that the job of SEO is to put eyes on your website what other methods would work? Some companies believe PPC  and pay per view (PPV) can help. For some it does. It is important to remember your return on investment. Could social media be an option?

Social media optimization

As of now, Social media is not considered search engine optimization.  It can however perform a similar function. The idea is you want eyes on and social media can deliver.  Keywords are still important unless you only use Pinterest.

You can’t build a brand without conversions

No amount of Search engine optimization will do you any good unless your website converts visitors to buyers. Keywords must match what a visitor is looking for. The content and call to action should turn the visitor into a buyer, or lead them to where you can contact them again. Since it is a known fact that not everyone buys the first time they see something getting them to a place you can reach them again is probably the most important function your website should perform. sales page
