As you are building your brand, keyword choice and use is important. Keywords have an effect for every business. This includes those rare companies who do not have an internet presence.  Every company’s goal is to reach their target market. The words you choose and use are going to help your company do this.

Base keywords

Companies who create no written content need base words especially on the internet.  These require thought. Others are using them to be found so competition can be fierce. These base words should define your company. If your words are highly used and searched, find words to add which will place you in an area still searched yet with less competition.

Several programs will help you choose the correct words for your company. There are also companies who will help by helping you define yourself as a company. These companies search until they find words that will be the most beneficial for your company.

Domain names

For domain names, your choice will depend on your goals. If you are branding to your company you will use the company name. For name branding, you can use your name. If you want people to find you by the words you use they should be part of your domain name.  Well-known companies and people will benefit more from the first two choices.


Every photograph and video you create should be tagged with words that will help them be found where people are searching for what you do. Don’t assume that photographs pulled from an online source will maintain the tags used for them originally. If there is a box that allows ALT tags, make sure to use them to define the information that give them value to your company. It is important to remember search bots read HTML code, not what you see visually.

Search engine optimization

The words you choose will help search engines understand where you want to be placed. Search engines will pass you by if you over use them. Alt tags at last check are not counted  as on page optimization other than for placement.

Think like a SEO professional

Search bots look for words that are similar and have the same meaning. They look for words that people would use when talking about your subject. A simple example of this would be, Fun |funny | hilarious. If given a choice always use | between the groups of words you choose.  People don’t search single words, they search phrases.  You want to use your choices based on how people search.  In most cases searchers are asking questions.

Your keywords need to be in H1 tags. These are title tags and should be used close to the front of the code for each page. Websites are comprised of pages that can pull traffic from search engines. Each page can be optimized and should be. Meta tags are also important. They should tell the search engine what you want people searching for you what they will find on the page. Meta descriptions are not part of search engine optimization. They are your commercial which people will find when they search. If you can’t grasp this idea there are companies who can and will help you.

There are many ways search engine optimization can be accomplished. You can do it all yourself. It is going to take time to learn. Be sure to choose a mentor who understands how it all comes together.  You can hire companies who do website SEO. This can be cost efficient for some companies. Some companies offer package deals as long as you sign a long-term contract. On site optimization is generally the highest cost. Companies worth using are going to charge about $800 for each average sized website.


Keyword choice and use are a vital part of building a brand. There are many ways to accomplish your goal. Start with your base words and build from there. You don’t want to end up with words where you can’t compete.
