Copywriting Tip: Sell With Emotion

Selling is done with emotion.  Buying is justified with logic.


It’s always that way round.  Imagine trying to sell a car by describing how the upholstery is made or quoting all the engineering stats about it.


Sure, a few “petrol heads” might buy it if it stacks up against its rivals enough, but trust me, even they would still be going through an emotional experience inside their heads.


For the likes of me, (I understand next to nothing about the inner workings of cars), such an ad would be a total waste of time.


Tell me I’ll arrive after a long journey as comfortable as when I began it and I might pay attention.


Describe the glorious surround sound system and I’ll be listening.


Woo me with the memories I’ll create, the adventures I can have … and then you can throw in a fact or two about how economical it is and how safe I’ll be even in a hurricane.


Words Persuade


Persuasion is causing someone to change their behaviour using words.  Okay, and maybe some pictures.


I learned this during my training as a psychotherapist.  It was some while later that it dawned on me that getting someone to heal emotionally and demonstrating that making a purchase of something is a good idea really use exactly the same mechanism.


It’s insight.


Every psychotherapist knows that clients really heal themselves.  We are the catalyst, the conduit perhaps, who somehow gets them to look within and that is always where they see, often for the first time, their problems from a new perspective.


Once that shift occurs, the job is done.  They can never “unsee” their new view of whatever was bugging them.


In a sales message, the insight is in seeing themselves doing the new skill or driving the new car … owning the widget, whatever.


Same mechanism.
