If you’re trying to be happy, you’re missing the point.  It’s somewhat like trying to lift yourself off the ground by tugging on your own boot laces.

Happiness is the default state we’re all born with and, just as the sun never leaves the sky even on the cloudiest, foggiest day, happiness is always there in the background of our lives.

Now, I can say this until I’m blue in the face, but if you’re feeling your life to be incomplete in some way, you’re unlikely to agree.  Logically, perhaps, you’ll take my point, but, well, you just don’t feel it.

This is sometimes known as “The When/Then Game.”  It goes like this:

WHEN I get X, THEN I’ll be happy.

So happiness is postponed and life becomes a struggle as you yearn for and attempt to get whatever you perceive to be missing from your life.

The struggle and the frustration, not to mention the misery, comes about because of a simple misunderstanding.

It’s simply this: Desiring more, better or different things or circumstances in your life does not exclude happiness. 

Desire and happiness are NOT mutually exclusive.

It’s fine to have desires.  It’s just a state of mind you can be in whilst you happily go about your business and hold the intention to get where you want to go.

If you’re driving to see a loved one, you don’t have to be miserable in the car, do you?  The journey can be filled with singing to the radio, enjoying the scenery, chatting to fellow travellers … a host of uplifting experiences are available, aren’t they?

The key to being happy with what you have in life isn’t to attempt to eliminate desire.  That would only create the paradox of desiring to be desireless!
