Nevada Insurance Enrollment Explains Why A High Auto Insurance Deductible Does Not Guarantee Savings

Auto Insurance deductibles, what are they and how do they work?

Post - Auto Insurance Deductibles. What Are They And How Do They Work?

Nevada drivers are always on the lookout for ways to trim down the cost of their auto insurance. To keep rates as low as possible, many drivers fall into the trap of focusing on their monthly premium at the expense of their coverage. However, when it's time to file a claim, many drivers discover that their insurance is insufficient or ill-suited for their needs and budget.

An auto insurance deductible is the amount that a driver pays out of pocket for damages sustained by their vehicle before their auto insurance company covers any accident-related expenses. Deductible amounts vary depending on the auto insurance company, which customers select when they're signing up for a policy. Depending on the insurer, deductibles may be as low as $0 or as high as $2,500 or more, with many drivers selecting a deductible around $500.

Unlike health insurance deductibles that are capped annually, auto insurance deductibles are charged on a per-claim basis. For example, if a vehicle is vandalized and then, on the way to the body shop, involved in a collision, two separate claims would be filed and would, therefore, have two separate deductibles.

When an insured driver files a claim for a covered incident, the auto insurance company works with the repair shop to determine what damage is related to the accident and what repairs are necessary to restore the vehicle to pre-loss condition. The insured pays their deductible, and the auto insurance company provides payment for the difference between the deductible and the cost of repair, either to the insured or to the shop providing the repairs.

As an example, if a policyholder has a $750 deductible and they are in a collision that results in $3,000 in damages, they pay their deductible and the policy covers the rest. In this scenario, the policyholder pays their $750 deductible, and the auto insurance company covers the remaining $2,250.

In most cases, deductibles are only applicable to collision and comprehensive coverage. Liability coverage, which pays for damages that the insured caused if they are found responsible for a collision, generally does not have a deductible.

Car accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, and whatever deductible a policyholder chooses, they should be able to pay out that amount at any given time. While a $2,500 deductible may result in a lower monthly payment, if the driver couldn't pay out that $2,500 for an unexpected repair, then their collision or comprehensive coverage may be virtually useless.

Some Nevada drivers choose high deductibles in exchange for a more affordable monthly premium, while other drivers prefer a lower deductible with a higher monthly premium. To keep their rate low, many drivers choose the highest deductible that they could comfortably afford.

Nevada Insurance Enrollment auto insurance agents specialize in helping local drivers review their insurance needs, claims history and budget. With this information, auto insurance agents can help drivers achieve the right balance between affordability and quality coverage.
