This question is answered in many different ways. The most popular answer is to make a profit. Some will say so I can buy a car, home, live the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

The truth and I learned this from Michael Oliver (Natural Selling) is for one reason only: to fulfill a need or want of people. In other words, a business is designed for others.

Think about it. If no one wants what you have to offer, do you have a business? The answer is obvious. Ok Ron, I get it, but why is this important to know?

Most people spend their time trying to sell things to people that don't want or need what they have to offer. Then when they get a "No", they take it personal or better yet, they believe the philosophy, "it's a numbers game".

Why would you try to sell gas to a man that doesn't have a car? Why would you sell meat to a vegetarian? Then when the person says "no", you tell yourself, "it's a numbers game". It doesn't make sense as a business person to offer these products to those particular people.

Have a conversation with people and find out what they are looking for. If you can help them and they are looking for what you have to offer and they are open to taking action, then and only then do you offer your products or services.

By the way, the reasons (the car, house, lifestyles) are personal reasons and they may keep you focused when and if things get rough. So don't forget about them. Just remember, they are not the purpose of a business.

Thanks Anna. I learned along time ago that in retail when a customer "instantly" says "I am just looking", you as the retail employee created that response. People mentally think you are on commissions and believe you will sell them anything so you can get paid. Right or wrong, the un-professional salespeople has destroyed the image of the industry for the professionals. I heard it said, that only 5% of salespeople are actually "professionals".

Thanks Dennis for the input. I laughed when I saw your comment about the word "sell". It was funny to me because Tom Hopkins teaches that "sell" is what he calls a nasty word. Along with "signature". The negative emotion that is tied to those words when you are talking with someone you want to get involved in your programs. There are many others, but it bought back flashbacks.

All business is to fill the needs of others. "Provide others with what they want and you will receive what you want". What you want is as important to you as what others want is important to them. Forget the term "sell" and provide others with something which will fill a real need for them.

Advertising is a numbers game whereas marketing is far more targeted. Not everyone will run out to buy a Big Mac from watching a TV commercial, but mail them a buy 1-get 1 free coupon and voila!
