Today I want to cover a word that has a lot of power, but most people don't fully understand the impact. That word would be "respect". As we will hear from some gurus, coaches, most mentors, parents and the list goes on that "respect is something that you earn".
Some will say, after a person accomplishes certain things, they gain your respect. Really? After a person has a certain financial status. Really? The way a persons treats you. Really? As you can see, my reply is the same - "really".
Now I don't tell people what to think because we are all responsible for our decisions. I will ask questions though. For example: what is the opposite of respect? Disrespect. So if I am understanding what is being said, we are to disrespect everyone until we feel they deserve our respect.
Gotcha!!! Bet you never thought of it that way.
When someone has accomplished something, that is not respect, that is proof. As far as deciding based on how a person treats you; tells me that you are allowing others to determine your character.
Disrespect is why in life you will get beat by your opponent or life itself. Some of us disrespect our health. We become unhealthy. We disrespect people because they aren't doing what we think they should do. Look around and you will notice that the number of people around will start to dwindle.
In sports, we see it all the time, the person or team that is picked to win, gets beat. Why? They didn't respect their opponent.
How about respect for yourself? Do you like the person you see in the mirror? They may not be where you want them to be, but respect that person because they are all you have. As you start to respect yourself, it becomes very easy to respect others. Why? Because you are giving them respect and it has nothing to do with them. You are giving them respect because they are a human being and deserve nothing less from you.
Does that mean you have to put up with everyone? No, if I don't like your actions, I will stay away from you. Why? I respect you as a person, but I have issues with your actions. When we learn to separate people from their actions, then respect is very easy to do. In short, they have nothing to do with each other.
Now what does this have to do with business?
If you disrespect the opportunity that is presented to you (by not taking care of it) it will not take care of you. What do I mean?
Are you focused on what you want from your business? Do you have a passion for it? Do you go to sleep thinking about it? Do you wake up and can't wait to get started? This is respect and appreciation that you have an opportunity.
For some of you what I am saying may be hard to grasp or you just may not want to grasp it. Only a humble spirit can fully get a handle on this concept. I don't preach or tell people what to believe but there is a book (Bible) that teaches that you give what you want. So you give respect freely and it will be returned to you.
By the way, it sure eliminates stress!!! - lol
It ain't right, it ain't wrong, it's just my opinion!!!
Respect to all and enjoy the journey.
