How to Travel Safely: 6 Tips

Traveling to new places can help open your mind to new cultures, ideas, and experiences. Getting out of your comfort zone is a great way to stretch—not to mention the benefits of an enjoyable vacation.

It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of traveling and forget to take the proper safety precautions. Pickpockets, thieves, and others take advantage of travelers’ lack of familiarity with the area, customs, language, etc. If you don’t pay attention, you could easily fall victim to various crimes.

This shouldn’t stop you from traveling around the country or around the world. There are precautions you can take to help ensure safe travel, and here are 6 top tips for the savvy traveler.

1. CARRY CASH AND CARDS SEPARATELY

Don’t keep all of your valuables in one place, even when walking around. Keep a money clip beneath your belt with some of your cash, but keep your cards and the rest of your cash in a safe pocket within your travel bag (or vice versa). This prevents pickpockets from being able to get all of your money at once.

2. REGISTER WITH THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT

If you are traveling outside of the country The U.S. State Department can provide you with important information about current conditions for traveling in foreign countries. Additionally, if you enroll in theSmart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), the relevant Embassy will send you up-to-date information and can help you more easily in the event of an emergency.

3. SCAN IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Keep scanned copies of your passport, credit cards, ID, etc. If you get pickpocketed or simply misplace any of these items, you’ll be happy you have copies.

4. LEARN THE LOCAL EMERGENCY NUMBERS

If you’re traveling within the United States, 911 is usually sufficient, though it might be a good idea to look up the nearest medical center just in case. If you’re in a foreign country, take the time to look up local emergency phone numbers.

5. KEEP IN TOUCH WITH A FRIEND BACK HOME

This is especially important if you are traveling alone or with a small group. Leave your itinerary with a trusted friend back home and touch base with him or her at least once a day. If anything happened, you would have a friend who could give valuable information about your plans to local authorities/the U.S. Embassy if you are out of the country.

6. INVEST IN A TOP-QUALITY BAG

The  WANDRD PRVKE series backpack was designed with travelers and photographers in mind. The creators aimed to make a functional backpack that didn’t sacrifice aesthetics. Travelers will enjoy its many features including the cash/passport pocket that lies against the wearer’s back, the weather-resistant material and zippers, the checkpoint-friendly laptop sleeve, and more.

Check out WANDRD backpacks and accessories for all of your traveling needs. Have a safe trip!
