A child becomes an adult when he realizes that he has a right not only to be right but also wrong

A child becomes an adult when he realizes that he has a right not only to be right but also wrong

As children, we often have a somewhat misleading view of the world. We naively see the adults we interact with, be they parents, teachers, and other grown ups, as perfect beings capable of doing no wrong.

The way adults react to what we do makes us think that perfection is an attainable ideal, especially because they are our role models. At this point in our lives, we also lack the capacity to tell what is right or wrong, and this makes us blind to the mistakes adults make.

Early in life we develop a mentality that everything we do is probably wrong. This becomes engraved in our minds, as we are corrected and disciplined because of our actions. This fuels in us a desire to be perfect, with the believe that that is what it takes to be an adult.

Worst of all, we feel terrible about making mistakes, because as children we believe that grown ups do not make mistakes, and this is where we as children really go wrong.

Ironically, the truth is the complete opposite. Being an adult, we make our fair share of mistakes, and being fairly comfortable with it. This means that we should not just feel good about ourselves when we do the right things, but also when we make mistakes.

So let's not beat ourselves up and feel like we are undeserving, or even unworthy, simply because we have made a mistake. This realization ultimately proves to us that we are no longer a child, who naively believes that people are capable of perfection.

We also realize just because we have made a mistake, it does not mean we are immature, or, more importantly, less deserving as members of our society.

Everyone makes mistakes, and accepting this ultimate truth is an important milestone in our lives, a point at which we have the knowledge to see the world as it is, and to accept that all our contributions do not make us unworthy because we make mistakes every once in a while.

Welcome to adulthood, the playground for grownups!
