You can tell a man is clever by his answers. You can tell a man is wise by his questions

You can tell a man is clever by his answers. You can tell a man is wise by his questions

A lot of people pride themselves in being clever and witty. One way we can tell is by the answers they give when asked about any subject.

A person may be clever by nature or by training. The answers they give are based on acquired knowledge and/or experience.

How do we gain knowledge? ... By asking questions.

Anybody with young children knows exactly how that goes, "How does this work, dad?" ... "Why is that, mom?" ... "How come?" ... "Why?" ... etc. Of course, as we grow older the questions become a little more sophisticated.

At a certain point in their lives, some people stop asking questions, because they are afraid somebody might think they are ignorant. There are no stupid questions. If we want to know something, we ask, and don't pay attention to what other people might think.

When we acquire knowledge, does that mean we also become wiser?

Cramming our heads full of facts and figures, might allow us to give clever answers, but it certainly does not make us any wiser.

How can we tell the wisdom in a person?

They are humble, do not boast about what they know. They aim to understand, rather than judge. Their questions tend to be open ended, to promote discussion, and encourage thinking.

Wise questions go straight to the heart of the issue, and focus on the its purpose.

Asking questions is one way to gain knowledge, but can also make us a little wiser. The answer is in our question.
