expectations

I believe that giving is its own reward. I feel deeper satisfaction when I let go of expecting something in return.

I listen to a friend's troubles without mentioning my own. I give them my full attention. I validate their experience, and let them know that their feelings matter to me.

I offer a compliment to a stranger. I tell them that I like their haircut, or admire their skate boarding skills.

I engage in small talk. I brighten someone's day by taking the time to ask about their family, or their weekend plans. I take an interest in their favorite topics, rather than steering the conversation towards my own concerns.

I perform extra chores at home when no one is looking. I take out the garbage, even when it is someone else's turn. I wipe the handle on the refrigerator door each time I pass by.

I share the credit at work. I tell my boss about how a team member resolved a conflict, or saved the company some money. I ask co-workers for their input. I show them that I respect their insights and talents.

I support worthy causes without expecting recognition. I donate money and volunteer my time.

Today, I give generously and anonymously. I put aside ulterior motives, and share my blessings joyfully with no strings attached.

Ask yourself these Self-Reflection Questions:

1. How can I avoid being treated like a pushover, when I give without expectations?

2. What is my motivation for giving?

3. What is one lesson my parents taught me about the importance of giving?
