Today, Father's Day

If it were not for mothers and Mothers Day there would be no Fathers Day. You see, Anna Jarvis, credited with promoting Mothers Day, provided the impetus prompting Sonora Smart Dodd to seek a similar day to honor fathers. Her father was a single parent who raised six children. In 1910 she suggested to her Pastor that a day be set aside to honor fathers. June 19, 1910, at the Spokane, Washington YMCA, Sonoro Smart Dodds father was honored. She had suggested June 5, her fathers birthday, but not enough time for the pastors to prepare for the occasion, it was deferred to June 19,1910.

June 19 was the third Sunday and Fathers Day continue to be observed on the third Sunday. It was celebrated sporatically in various parts of the country up until 1966. President Lyndon B Johnson issued a proclamation to observe Fathers Day nationally. Six years later, Fathers Day became a permanent holiday when it was signed into law by President Richad Nixon in 1972.

Why is Fathers Day important?

One might say it gives parity to fathers since there is Mothers Day. One might say fathers deserve it because of their unique role in the family. All these are good, but let me advance another perspective.

From a moral perspective, "fatherhood" may be viewed as a microcosm of "Godhood". Earthly fathers are to provide for the family, protect, teach, encourage, discipline, love and cherish it. Fathers are to provide the grid or lens through which the family sees our Heavenly Father. If children see their fathers as good, they are more likely to see our Heavenly Father as good.

Not only should we celebrate Fathers Day, but broadcast the importance of and examples of Godly fatherhood.
