To Direct Link or Not to Direct Link

Published on 11/1/2017
For additional information  Click Here

Direct linking is the term associated with “linking directly to your affiliate link” within a PPC campaign. So instead of the destination link for your ad being your own website, you would be linking directly to Wealthy Affiliate through your affiliate link.

You would in essence emulate Wealthy Affiliate (as your site) and link directly to it, bypassing your website altogether.

Direct linking campaigns used to be very common years back, but as more people started doing it, the search engines started to crack down on direct linking and started disallowing any direct links at all.

Things have changed for the better however.

Google Adwords & BingAds now allow direct linking if done in a certain way and in this lesson we are going to be walking you through the process.

One thing I want you to be aware of before we get into this training is that direct linking campaigns are typically the lazy way out (and don't convert as high), but they do serve a purpose (which we will get getting into). These campaigns should NOT replace normal campaigns that send people to your website first.

I have created a video walking you through the process of setting up a direct linking campaign. Check it out below.

DISCUSS VIDEO: Creating a Direct Linking Campaign to Promote WA

How to Properly Construct a Campaign

One of the main issues with direct linking is that it is very difficult to be relevant. Unless you are using product keywords directly, then your keyword is not going to be 100% relevant to the actual content of the page you are linking to.

WE do not allow you to advertise under any "wealthy affiliate" trademarked product keywords with these campaigns. You can advertise under any keyword you like as long as it doesn't include "wealthy affiliate, wealthyaffiliate or wealthyaffiliate.com" within it.

There are 4 Essential Components to a Direct Linking Campaign.

(1) The Keywords

Ideally, you are going to want to keep the keywords very relevant to the page you are sending people to.

affiliate marketing
affiliate programs
_________ affiliate program

niche marketing
how to sell xyz online
make money online
earn more money
internet marketing
build an online business
build a website
niche websites
affiliate business

Some others that are not quite as relevant:

online jobs
hate my job
mlm marketing
online school
highest paying job
highest paying profession

(2) The Ad

The ad should be relevant, but should also have a call to action. The more relevant the ad, the higher the click-through rate (CTR), the lower the click costs.

(3) The Link

You will want to link directly to your affiliate link through using the following format:

http://www.wealthyaffiliate.com/a_aid/vakj1tkb (best)

Instead of....

http://www.wealthyaffiliate.com?a_aid=vakj1tkb

To Google, this looks like you are sending people more to a “directory” on your website versus to an affiliate which, something that they do allow but they are not huge fans of.

(4) The Bid

Remember, your break even cost for a conversion is going to be around $7 per Starter referral so choose your bid accordingly. We recommend for a newer direct link campaign that you bid $0.30-$0.50 initially and then adjust accordingly.

*Note: Google only allows ONE Wealthy Affiliate link per keyword (it will choose the highest quality ad + highest bid price) so if you are direct linking, you are in essence competing against everyone else that is direct linking.

Being Aware of Your Audience.

One thing that can cause issues with a direct linking campaign is relevance, or a lack thereof.

This is exactly where direct linking will usually break down. It is not that it doesn’t work, it is the fact that the flow of relevance between the keyword and the actual landing page is not “hyper targeted”. Being hyper targeted leads to maximized conversions.

There is a limited number of keywords that the WealthyAffiliate.com homepage is relevant to...and you cannot hyper target your keywords with relevant landers because you are not in control of the landing page content when you direct link.

I have run several tests and direct linking to Wealthy Affiliate can still work because the homepage does convert, but I would recommend that you keep your keywords fairly relevant to the industry...but feel free to test things.

Try to capture the state of someone within your keyword choices. Someone searching for _________ would be readily interested in the services offered at Wealthy Affiliate. Direct linking campaigns should NOT replace your other campaigns, but they can definitely lead to profitable campaigns. Test them out for yourself!
