Labor Day

Labor DaySeptember 4th is Labor Day.  So many times Labor Day and Memorial Day and/or Veteran’s Day are confused.  They are not one in the same day.

Labor Day is celebrated in September and celebrates the hard work that American workers do every workday in America.

Memorial Day or Veteran’s Day is observed in May and dedicated to those who lost their lives fighting for freedom while serving in the military.

Labor Day always falls on the first Monday in September so we have a long Labor Day weekend (3 days off work).

Unofficially, it is also considered the last day of summer.

Canada also celebrates their Labour Day on the first Monday of September.

Labor DayThe USA proposed a September holiday was to be the first Monday of the month and in the 1880’s it was to become known as “Labor Day.”

There were many public events, parades, family dinners and parties, barbeques and pic-nics.

Oregon was the first State to make Labor Day official in 1887.  By 1894 thirty of the US States were celebrating Labor Day officially as a holiday.

All U.S. states have made Labor Day a statutory holiday.

In the United States, the much anticipated Labor Day weekend starts the beginning of many types of sports with the most popular being football (NFL).  NASCAR auto racing begins in many of the most famous raceways all over the country.  Last but not least, the US Open Tennis Championships are held in New York.

Labor Day is also becoming one of the biggest retail sale dates, next only to Christmas’ Black Friday.  Originally, this was designated for back-to-school sales but these days many of the schools have already started but they still have the sales.
