I Just Remembered That I Saved My Neighbors Lives 2 Times In A Year!

I just remembered that I saved my neighbors lives 2 tiimes in a year. I wanted to share this with you. Not just my next door neighbors but the entire block and maybe some others that were passing by in their cars. I don't make a very big deal about it but I did get a lot of praise from everyone and was called a hero by the town. The City of Philadelphia like many other cities in the world are run on natural gas for their heating and hot water. These gas lines are all run under ground and were put there many many years before most of us were here. They are since failing one by one. My first month I moved to 2251 Faunce Street in Philadelphia,PA. we had a knock on our door for everyone to get out so that the gas company could check for a reported leak. The leak turned out to be right next to us and our neighbors. They went to work digging a huge hole in between the houses. I was very nervous for our family but they told us no need to worry. We would all be ok. I still did not believe them. But we made it though ok. When I moved in I was getting a smell of natural gas several times a day from my back window. I did not really understand what was going on. So when I smell this again a couple years later I was a little slow at realizing what was going on. Everyday I was getting just a small wiff of natural gas everytime I was unloading the groceries from my car. I was telling my husband and my in-laws that something didn't seem right. Everyone told me I was crazy. It was driving me nuts. I knew I wasn't crazy and I was smelling something. Finally one day when my husband was helping me unload the groceries he smelled it. I was so happy that he smelled it too. But I was very unhappy at the same time because this meant it was real. I called the gas company and they came out and checked and told us all there was a small leak right in front of the house but between the two houses again. So they went right to work fixing it. Took days this time but it was finally done. Lots of bad nerves again. Couldn't stand what could happen if someone made a mistake down there. Not to many months later we had a big explosion not to far down the road. 6900 block of Torresdale Ave. had exploded from a natural gas leak. Workers were already on the scene of the gas leak when a worker dropped a tool sparking the explosion. One guy was missing from the explosion. A worker that just started his job that night. His father got him the job there and he was so happy to be responding to his first gas leak. We were in our house playing a game on the XBOX when we heard and felt a huge rumble. It shook the entire house. A couple minutes later we got a phone call from a friend in New Jersey saying did you just feel the ground shake. We thought it may have been an earthquake but later found it was an explosion. Here is a video of what it looked like. So this is a serious issue in Philadelphia. The pipes are all getting old. A few days later another explosion in Allentown PA. Someone turned on a light switch and sparked a huge explosion. A couple months later I started to get a large whiff of natural gas. Everytime I got out of my car. Sometimes when I walked around the corner of the house. I was laughing cause I thought I was smelling things. Just like I thought before I was nuts. I was told this time that was no way that there was another gas leak. This by my family of course. I was told by the gas workers that anytime I think I smell it I am and make sure I call. But I was still really unsure of myself. It took me along time before I got the guts to call. Even the person I got on the phone was questioning me like I was nuts. No way a gas leak was going to happen like that on the same street so soon. Of couse someone came out. Actually one person left and sent another guy because he was puzzled at his readings. He too did not want to believe that there was another gas leak on the same street. So when this other guy comes out he is questioning me like he was from the FBI. Like I had just commited the biggest crime. A couple hours later I decide to pop my head out the door and the first guy that responded was getting ready to knock on my neighbors door. He wanted to get in his house to check what was going on. He started to get annoyed when no one was answering and started pounding harder on the door. I said is something really wrong. He said yes there is mame and we have to get in this house right now. Do you have a number for this house he asked. I said no I don't but I know they are home. I tried yelling for them and pounding on door with him but they still didn't answer. Then they had to get the police to come and start evacuating. I said to the Gas worker wow I wasn't crazy. And then he screamed at me and said "WHO CALLED YOU CRAZY MAME" I was like relax relax it wasn't anyone on your end it was my family OMG. Turned out it was the biggest gas leak Philadelphia has had yet and continued for the entire block. It took weeks for them to fix this and we all got to remain at home while they did the work. It was a nuisance everytime you wanted to leave. You could never get off the street or even get back home sometimes. But we were getting the leak fixed and that was all that mattered. We remained in the house waiting for the boom. Although we probably would not have heard a thing. Don't know exactly how that works. Don't wish to either. But we were very lucky that this time there were more experienced people on the job and didn't replace a bad pipe with another bad pipe that caused the biggest gas leak on record in Philadelphia. When all the block found that I was the one who smelled it again and took a chance of calling the gas company once again they all sent me flowers and roses cut from their gardens they grew outside their house. Everyday I had more flowers. They would be on the step when I opened the door and on my car window waiting for me. My son would sometimes walk into the house and hand me flowers and say these are from the neighbors down the road. I really didn't realize what I had really done and did not consider myself a hero. I just did what you were told to do when you smelled a gas leak. Except I did take sometime fighting with myself about it. No one else had smelled it and if I didn't call when I had what might have happened to us. So if you live in a town or city that has natural gas and you even have the slightest possibilty that you might be smelling something you think is gas. Let me tell you that it is gas. You need to let someone know real fast. Don't be scared that you are going to look crazy because let me tell you that you are not.
