The Disabled Debit Card Mystery

The disabled debit card mystery is solved but might not be over. But at least we can use our debit cards for now. On Saturday morning I was awoke by my mother on the phone asking what it means when you can't get any money from the ATM. She knows it happens to me all the time. But mostly because I am overdrawn. But there are other times when the bank is at fault for a downed system or something stupid like that. I said I don't know do you have money in there. She said of course I do. It won't even allow me to get a balance. I thought wow her card is locked and she has the same problem I did where people were taking money from her account. So I said I would call the bank right away. She called and was told it was a problem with VISA and you couldn't get money unless she got it from her own banks ATM. It does seem there aren't many of them around when you need them. You could not do credit purchases but the banker wasn't sure about debit and told my mom to give it a try. She told her no way was she shopping for groceries and finding out her card didn't work. The banker told her to go to a convience store and buy a pack of gum. She replied I am not putting a pack of gum on my debit card. So she came home for the day and didn't go shopping. What's funny is she is always preaching to me how you should have a little cash on you and not rely on those debit cards for shopping. I was laughing at her and saying what was that you said mom? What was that about relying on debit cards? I thought wow I wonder how many people are out there trying to get money for trips and people down the shore. Going to get tickets for a movie that starts in minutes. People out to eat and when it was time to pay the bill get declined. I was just grateful I hade nothing I needed that day. The bank told my mom they could be back up in minutes or it could be hours. No one really knew what was even going on or what it really affected. I never heard anything else about it. It wasn't even mentioned on the news or anywhere on the internet. For some reason they were keeping it on a need to know basis. Call the bank if you want to know why you can't get cash, pay for something or get your balance. Then my mom brought it to my attention that in our county paper yesterday there was an article about it. It was titled "The Mystery Of The Disabled Debit Card" written by Jim Six. Jim said he received a call from his companion on Saturday morning telling him that she knows he uses his debit card all the time and that there was some kind of global failure making debit cards useless. So being a skeptical person and having to research everything he decided to Google News it and found nothing on the subject. He called the bank after finding nothing on the internet. She confirmed there was a problem with debit cards. She said there had been a problem with one of the companies that handles debit card transactions. The banker told Jim it was being worked on and should be back any minute now. On Sunday morning they were still not working. He called the bank on Monday morning to see if he could get more information and was told they started working Saturday night. He said what before I called on Sunday? It was a miscommunication problem alright between the bank and it's employees that were miscommunicating with him the customer and giving him the wrong information. He was later told it was a power outage in the west that was rendering debit cards useless. So it turns out some people may not have been affected. But there are a few large companies out there that handle debit card transactions so there were so many people without it. What he was very upset with is if this had affected thousands of people why was there no public announcement about it. Why couldn't the bank provide him with a phone number to find out what was going on exactly so he knew when he and others could use their debit cards again. Was his and others information compromised like one time before when someone got his debit card number without his knowledge and charged 200 dollars and some odd cents in California some where. He asked why only 200 dollars would they charge. They were seeing if it would work and then they would do it for even more money. My card was compromised during the weeks of my birthday and anniversary. So needless to say we got to do nothing for either weekend. When I hung up the phone on 9:30 Tuesday night July 10th I was told my account had been compromised but everything was ok and only a 20 dollar charge came through. But when I woke the next morning all my money was gone and there were overdraft fees and overdrawn charges for things that were purchased with no money there. Including charges that were from me and my husband that came through in the mean time. This took the next two weeks pay checks that came in direct deposit and we were so broke until the investigation was over. I really wish I didn't need a bank account. My Mother-In-Law called me the other day and told me that while at the hair dressers there were so many people sharing stories about how it had happened to them too. It seems to be happening more and more theses days. These companies advertise all the time to use their debit cards instead of cash but are they keeping our cash safe. I think not. And not to warn people that this had happened. Jim said there is still no news about it. It was kept a secret for some reason. He stated what would have happened to him if he were out to dinner and couldn't pay the bill? He'd be doing dishes and worse being humilated. I was thinking all day about all the people at the shore stuck there for the weekend with no way of getting money. How many people missed that movie they were about to go see. How many people ran out of gas. How many people had to put back a whole cart of groceries while the cashiers were saying to others why don't people check if they have money before they come and buy the store only to put it back. When in fact you may have enough money to buy the whole store. These are Jim Six's last words of the article,"Sheesh". Thats the only words he has for these big companies that have our lives in their hands. That can't even give us a courtesy of telling us not to go and be humilated. If I had another means of taking care of things I would not have a bank account or a debit card at all. There's the mystery of the disabled debit card that you may not even have known about.
