Using a Lead Magnet to Build Your List

I'm willing to bet you've heard it a million times ... "The money is in the list." Am I right? But how in the heck do you build a list of people willing to part with their hard-earned cash? One way is making sales, of course. But isn't that what the list was supposed to be for in the first place? Kind of sounds like a catch-22, doesn't it?

 

So what's the real deal on list building? To be honest, I'm just now figuring this out myself. After 17 years in internet marketing, I finally started building a list in the last six months. But to be honest, it's been slow going for the most part. That is, right up until the past two weeks, when I finally found a lead magnet that converted interested parties into members of my now red-hot list.

 

 

What is a lead magnet anyway? Well, just like the name implies, it's something that will draw leads to your list. Usually it's a free report, a giveaway offer of some sort. In the past I've offered my own free e-book (you've likely seen the ads here and it's on my profile page as well). That did okay, but it was kind of slow going overall. My story and ideas need tweaking, apparently. Either that or I just haven't found the right place to promote it yet.

 

However, I've discovered that if you pair up the freebie (whatever it may be) with the right demographic market, that thing really can become a true lead magnet. In fact, in just over two weeks I've added over 100 new leads to my email list. If you're an old pro at email marketing, that may not seem like much to you. But for me, that's a lot! In fact, as I write this my list in getting ready to hit the 500 subscriber milestone.

 

You may be saying to yourself, that's all fine and dandy for Mr. Arcand, but how can that work for me? I'll give you two pieces of advice and then a resource that I think can make all the difference in setting up your squeeze page and testing to see what works and what doesn't.

 

First, determine what your target market is going to be. If you're promoting a business opportunity, then you want to target folks that are interested in working from home, making money on the side, or building a business (online or offline). Try to make it as targeted as possible.

 

Second, find a lead magnet that you can use as a free giveaway that not everyone has yet. I think that's an important aspect as well. If it comes down to it, write your own special report. If you do this, you can include links in your report to your own business opportunities or affiliate programs.

 

Last but not least, there is a fantastic system that has everything you need to build your list, including pre-made squeeze pages! They even have a library of free e-books that you could use as lead magnets to build your own list!
