Click HereHaving recently retired from hospital pharmacy, my perspective on conventional 'interventional' medicine is painstakingly slanted towards health care which puts a premium on using medications to alleviate symptoms. Over the course of my years working in the hospital setting, it was sad to see many of the same patients being readmitted repeatedly because they never truly became well; perhaps their conditions improved or their symptoms subsided, but they certainly had not achieved any degree of true health.
So imagine my surprise when 6 months after retiring the same hospital I worked for invites me to hear a physician speak on the subject of integrative medicine. You see, I've always felt since my days working for a pharmaceutical company that there had to be a better way towards health and wellness. But alternative medicine back in the 80s was nowhere near what it is today. Now there are scientifically validated natural protocols which have more potential for creating wellness than their pharmaceutical counterparts. The problem is that most are not part of the hospital formulary and patient's health plans do not cover anything that has not been FDA approved. The good news is that's about to change!
The physician who spoke will be training hospital physicians, starting with oncologists, on natural interventions for helping patients actually get well. He is what is called an INTEGRATIVE physician, blending both conventional and alternative medicines in order to achieve the optimal outcome for the patient! I was so thrilled to hear his speech, because this is what I thought has been sorely needed in health care today. In fact, I wanted to leap to my feet and shout Amen! when he said that oncologists will be trained to think outside of the box in terms of radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy. The importance of the immune system will be the starting point; it is indeed sad that the typical oncologist acts like the immune system has little to no role in helping a cancer patient heal, when it actually is the single most important factor in defeating the disease!
The thought crossed my mind during and after his seminar that I could actually see myself coming out of retirement and going back to the hospital I just left to work with this doctor. I'll keep everyone posted :)
Bottom line is that it's great to see the tide turning in health care today. Perhaps this is a trend which will permeate other hospital systems throughout the country!
