What Every Cancer Patient Should Do REGARDLESS of Treatment Choice

When someone is first diagnosed with some form of cancer, the initial shock oftentimes leads to hasty decisions in terms of treatment options. The typical oncologist usually pushes for radiation and/or chemotherapy. Nowadays, many oncologists will suggest some form of what is called immunotherapy, i.e. using agents which work with the body's own immune system to fight the cancer. Of course there is a plethora of alternative treatments to consider as well. Sometimes well meaning family members and friends suggest certain supplements or modalities that may seem far fetched and unproven, relying on anecdotal evidence for some form of validity. The options seem overwhelming considering the circumstances. But the smart patient realizes that the cancer didn't develop overnight; there is time to weigh the different options and of course no need to rush into anything.

What most cancer patients fail to realize is that one of the main reasons they have acquired their cancer diagnosis is because their immune system has 'misfired'. The cancer has outsmarted the very innate system that is supposed to protect from such disease. There is a component of everyone's immune system called natural killer cells (NK cells) which is designed to attack viruses, bacteria, cancer cells, etc. When someone has a form of cancer which is rapidly spreading, this component of the immune system has either become inactivated or simply overwhelmed and not functioning to the degree necessary to keep the cancer in check. Modern medicine offers some pharmaceutical interventions which strongly influence NK cell activity, one of which is called Interleukin-2. Some oncologists consider this the gold standard of cancer treatment, as it has been shown to raise NK cell activity significantly (one study showed an increase of 389% over baseline). The downside is the cost and the side effects. Typical cost of one series of treatment with IL-2 injections is $6,000! Not to mention a laundry list of negative side effects.

In my previous blogs on the subject of immunotherapy, I highlighted a natural immunotherapy agent that has NO negative side effects and costs in the $50 range. One of the ways this scientifically validated dietary supplement affects immune function (there are many) is by increasing NK cell activity. So how does it compare to the $6,000 pharmaceutical? In an independent NK cell study this natural immunotherapy agent was tested using an IL-2 standard to compare effectiveness. In this study the researchers used K-562 tumor cells (erythroblastic human leukemia). Results: both samples significantly increased NK cell activity. The advanced formulation of the natural agent increased NK cell activity by a whopping 437% over baseline! Compare this to the $6,000 drug, which increased NK cell activity by 389%.

Any cancer patient certainly wants the NK cell component of their immune system working for them; this way, the tumors can't 'hide' from the immune system. In other words, the patient now has a realistic fighting chance to beat the cancer. So no matter what treatment options a cancer patient ultimately chooses, even if it's chemo and radiation, they should strongly consider giving their immune systems the critical ammunition they need to fight the disease.
