The #1 Key to Online Success (The 'Real' Secret)

Like most of us, I struggled for years to unlock the 'secret' behind online success.  Having said that, I suppose one could say, and it would be very true, that the #1 key to online success is to never quit!  So it is really the mindset, the determination, the persistence, the consistency and the belief that really underly success at anything in life including success online.

But beyond the 'never say die' attitude, I have learned that, for most if not all of us, we are really in the business of lead generation.  In other words, it does not matter what our primary business is, whether it be an affiliate offer of some sort, your own product or service, or someone else's products or services, we must all attract leads.  

Traditionally, most MLM businesses taught us to go and write out a list of 100 names (usually friends and family) and then go out and pitch your business at them.  Most of us quickly burned throught that list of names and then sat and wondered 'where do I go now'.  In other words, 'where can I find people to promote by business to?'  At that point, we ended up cold calling.  Cold calling, and the massive rejection that accompanies cold calling, led to frustration and, at that point, many or most people quit.  That experience often left a bad taste in the mouth and a negative view of network marketing.  Thankfully, things have changed!

Today it is possible to find people who are interested, or who can become interested, in what you are promoting by offering what is called a 'lead magnet'.  This simply means giving  something of value that a potential prospect can use to help them in some way.  The something of value can be anything really but it usually means something that will help people in their business, in their health, in their quest to find that special person, or any number of things.  The thing of value usually means helpful information but it does not have to be.  It could be a free sample of your product.

By offering up something of value, you can often get something in exchange and that something is the person's contact information, usually a name and an email address.  That information can be obtained with an attractive 'lead capture page'  In other words, to secure the thing of value that you are offering, the person will plug their name and email address into your 'lead capture page'.  You have now generated a 'lead'.

The critical importance of generating a 'lead' is this.  If you are promoting your online business, you are usually posting a link to your company's website on social media, traffic exchanges, safelists, classified ad boards and so on.  If you do not have the ability to secure the contact information of the visitors that view your website, most people will look at your offer and move on.  And that means you have lost a sales and the odds are that you will never have the opportunity to connect with that visitor ever again.  But...if your link takes the visitor to a 'lead capture page' you can then  follow up with that visitor by way of a well-designed email follow-up series.  A simple fact is that, on average, people need 7 exposures to your offer before they will make the decision to buy from you or to join you in your business.  In light of that fact, can you see that just posting a link, hoping your visitors will buy from you or join you in your business, is really a fruitless exercise.  You are wasting your time and your money if this is your approach to online marketing and, the odds are that you will become discouraged and will eventually quit.  

We have all heard that 'the money is in the list' (meaning your list of what are now new 'prospects') but the real secret is that 'the fortune is in the follow up!'  In other words, when you are able to follow up with visitors (who are now prospects) you have the ability to begin to build a relationship with that person by offering more value.  This does a couple of very important things.  1)  it builds your brand by setting you apart from the hordes of those who are simply posting links; 2) it builds the relationship with that person and 3) you become a person your new prospect can come to know, like and trust and, finally, 4) your chances of that person buying from you or joining you in your business go way up!  As an added benefit, you can now pass this knowledge on to your new list of prospects and your ability to duplicate is massively increased.
