The Best Sales People Don't Sell!
  

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with  several of the best sales people on the planet.  They were 'naturals'.  Whenever they were in ear shot, if they were with a customer, I did my best to eaves drop.  I wanted to learn from them. 

What I learned was that they were NOT selling! 

Being a newbie, all I could figure out was that once they and the customers were 'laughing', a sale would soon follow!

Of course they were selling, they were selling themselves.  They were becoming friends with the customers, they were building trust and rapport, they were comfortable and relaxed, they were humorous and fun.  When the customer was ready, they helped that customer to make their buying decision (a sale was made).

Today we call this kind of selling...Pre-Sell or Branding.  Call it what you will, it works!  People buy from people they like and trust.  It has been that way for years and is not likely to change, and it applies to Internet sales as well as in person or over the phone sales.

Before you unsuccessfully try to shove a product in someone's face or down their throat, consider trying to not sell for a moment. 

HOW?

Find some common ground.  Use this to 'break the ice'.  Once your customer begins to talk, LISTEN!   Do not pretend to listen, pay attention.  I was a salesman for many years and told people that I was paid to listen (and I was).

When the time is right (you will learn when the time is right with experience), direct the conversation back to what you are selling, usually with questions  (qualifying questions).  Then sit back and let your customer tell you how to sell them! 

Do not forget to sprinkle in some humor.  At some point, you find that you and your customer are laughing or chuckling together....a sale will soon follow!

He had landed a job selling security systems. 

In a matter of weeks, Robbie was the top salesman.

At the next sales meeting, Robbie was asked to share some of his secrets to success.

"I have a trick that I use."  began Robbie.

Rob picked up the company brochure and continued,  "If no one is home, I leave our brochure on the kitchen table."
