Storm Emergency Advice
By George Pierce

Rain

As I write this post, my neck of the woods which is western North Carolina, USA, is seeing the approach of hurricane Florence.  Light bands of rain with little wind for the past several hours, makes one think that we are in for a nice little 'soaker', rather than a potentially monstrous storm.

The reason for this post is that I saw this useful information on Facebook for evacuees and non-evacuees of Hurricane Florence   In any kind of storm emergency (tornado, blizzard, hurricane, flood, earthquake, wild fire, etc.),  I believe that you will find that this information will help.

Take Pictures:

Take several pictures of every room and its contents from every angle.  Also open drawers and cabinets and snap a picture of the contents.  Do the same for the outside of your home. According to what I read on FB, a photo is as good as a receipt for insurance purposes.  A few minutes of photos is worth your time.

Download 'Zello Walkie Talkie'

This is an app that people used after the hurricane in Texas.  If you lose service, the app allows you to communicate with your friends and family. The app should be in the App Store for iPhone users and the Play Store for android users.

Dishwasher Storage!

Empty your dishwasher and use it for safer storage. It is waterproof, it is secure, and it is likely to survive a storm and/or flood.

Flying Objects?

Allow me to add that it is wise to bring in or secure anything that is outside that might get blown away.  The potential problem is that things like lawn chairs, BBQ s, and trash cans can turn into missiles.  These objects can cause real damage, so do not take that chance.

Bubba Catches More Fish!

My good friend Bubba is one of the nicest people on the planet, just not one of the brightest.  Bubba loves to fish.  About ten years ago, I discovered that Bubba was making it a point to go fishing in bad weather.  Even in the worst of storms, Bubba would jump in his boat and power out near a little island on the lake and cast his line.

His reasoning was that no one else was fishing which meant no competition and thus Bubba would catch more fish.

Fortunately, Bernice (Bubba's wife) and I talked some sense into the old boy.

I share this story because there is one more bit of storm advice that I wish to share.

Get Out Of Dodge!

I saw an interview this morning on TV with a woman who decided that she and her family would not evacuate.  She and her family are stranded on the second floor with no way in or out.  She said something that  I took to heart and I urge that you will too.

To paraphrase, she said that all the reasons that she had for staying were no longer important.

Thank you for reading, my friends, I wish you much success.
