How To do List Segmentation

Lesson 3: List Segmenting.

Lemme explain it to you like this...

It's about 8:30pm in the evening. Mike and Joe are parked in a car park of a Las Vegas bar. Mike is a professional poker player and Joe wants to know how to improve his game and become a great player too. 

Mike says, the best way to win is to know who you're playing before you start. You need to make sure you're targeting people that aren't very good poker players. 

Joe says, "But, how do I do that?"

Mike says, "Follow me."

Mike reaches under his car seat and pulls out a Sawed-off Shotgun. 


Mike says "Do you wanna know how to win at poker?"

Joe says "Yes!"

Mike says, "Then follow me." And gets out the car with the Shotgun under his coat. 

They both start to walk towards the bar and Joe is scared stiff thinking "Mike had lost his marbles!"

They walk into the bar. There are guys at the bar having a drink and there are ladies dancing to music on the dance floor with a couple of guys playing pool. Everyone is having a great time.

Mike and Joe sit at a table. 

Mike says "You ready?"

Joe says "No!" shaking his head left and right. 

Mike pulls out his Shotgun and racks it.

The bar owner and a few other people, look up and look towards Mike and Joe, to where the sound of the racking of shotgun came from. The majority of people hadn't noticed the sound. The bartender comes over and ask's "Is there a problem here?".

Mike says "No Pete, I'm just teaching the boy a lesson."

Mike then puts the gun away and says to Joe, "Did you notice, what happened?"

Of about 30 people here, only 7 of them knew the sound of the shotgun. Those 7 people are street smart and you won't play poker with them. But, If you were planning a hunting trip. Chances are, those 7 guys would probably be interested because they know guns. 

So when you send an email your "Racking the Shotgun" to find out who's interested in your product and who's not. 

The people who opened your message and are responsive are the people you're interested in. 

You will now focus on those people. 

Doing that is what you call segmenting. 

You will then send another email to those people who are responsive until you get your desired response.
