Why do people buy? This is indeed the million dollar question.

One thing is for sure that there is great diversity among customer reasons for buying.

On the other hand, there has always been and always will have a significant degree of homogeneity.

Is this a contradiction? Of course,but what human behavior is not sometimes enigmatic.

Reality and figuring out human motives is never straightforward.

Marketers need to figure out this main piece of the marketing cycle.

One thing for certain is that the internet has made the new online marketing rules much different.

The old marketing rules are out,however,customer motivations remain the same.

Marketing rules have change because of the world wide web,but buying motivators are still based on a few needs and emotions.


Prudent internet marketers always incorporate these motivators into their marketing materials,sales funnels, and other marketing copy like emails.

Once needs are temporarily fulfilled at one level,consumers, relative to the higher levels, buy on emotions.

Let's take a look at some of these motivators and some of the Internet's new marketing approaches.

Ok, Mazlow's hierarchy of need is still very much relevant today, as human beings are still.....well human beings.

You know that people must have shelter,food and comfort and that directly corresponds with the first level of the model.


Here physiological needs are still needed.

The top sites on the Internet focus on these needs , witness Amazon for example.

The focus has shifted to the top three levels, as far as demand and relative ease with which to sell products and services on the Internet.

The safety level has however, taken on new relevance due to the popularity of the survival niche.

The third level has obviously taken on rather intense internet marketing significance.

Witness all the new online dating sites.

You could probably make a case for the bottom rung of the triangle with the profusion of s.e_xual oriented sites.

The new internet marketing rules,from a B2B perspective, are probably more oriented to the top two tiers as the new marketer needs to:

  • give access and promote involvement
  • feature the achievements of customers (this is all about customers,as
  • you want to incorporate even the marginal customers.)
  • tell your customer's story
  • integrate customers into your business,via webinars for example
  • talk about how great your customers business is
  • submit your customers for awards

From a B2B and customer's motivational perspective,if you are using some of the bullets above,you are helping develop your customer to be successful.

The new internet marketing sales techniques have introduced and integrated these B2B techniques:

Initially,the marketer never talks about the product,only helps find what the customer needs and wants.

The viable marketer becomes a consultant.

The consultant leads their customer to the best products to get the job done.

As a consultant, you explains how it would help the customer solve business problems.

Keep this in mind,businesses and consumers already know they have a problem.

Maybe looking at internet marketing from this perspective,puts the needs model in front of you as a means to choose a viable niche, as well as, develop a viable and rewarding online enterprise.

I retired in network engineering from Qwest Corporation,now Century Link Corporation.I'd volunteered for two years with RSVP (retired seniors volunteer program),guardians angels retirement community,Minnesota Responds (public health volunteer),and the Elk River food shelf.
