What is your dream

What is your dream

Every one has dreams or goals and you know no matter what, they nearly always require money to enable you to complete them.

Perhaps you love travelling and would like to take an extended holiday around the world by air or sea stopping off in different countries to explore local cities and culture.

Maybe you are a student or a parent looking to save money to cover tuition costs or fund a gap year project, or perhaps you are looking to fund a course to improve your future employment prospects

Large houses and fast cars appear on many people dream list but they do go hand in hand with being wealthy and one needs to discover the secret to wealth.

I think the majority of people are quite happy if they and their family can live long and healthy lives with food on the table in a comfortable house, free of debt and being able to a afford a two week holiday every year

There are people in our society whose dreams are more basic, a place to live, fresh water, and a way to survive

Here are a couple of my dreams

Two of my earliest dreams where to take part in an adventure race in an exotic country, after seeing the Raid Gauloises on television and also to retire at the age of 55 so as to be able to enjoy life.

I had no idea on how I was going to be able to achieve either until one day whilst working for Elf in Aberdeen, a notice appeared in a company magazine looking for sportsman to take part in a race being sponsored by the Company, to be held in the Philippines, by the former organiser of the Raid Gauloise.

The door to my dream opportunity was open, however competition for places was fierce with 50 people competing for just 6 places including 2 women, most in their 20-30 's and I was the oldest at 49. The skills required were Sailing,Sea Kayaking,Caving, Inline Skating and Trekking. I certainly had the sea skills and stated immediately training on Inline skating along the esplanade, building up to cover 100 miles per session.

We went to the west of Scotland for kayak training, sailing in Peterhead, caving in Derbyshire, and trekking in the Peak District during the winter, on completion of which the team selection was made based on the reports of the instructors. the results were so close that the company elected to enter two teams, a young team nicknamed the racing snakes and a mature team.

Training continued, including medical checks and an expedition first aid course. Equipment and supplies were sourced including Sea Kayaks, Tents, caving equipment and clothing and these were shipped to the Samar in the Philippines.

Teams also had to create a Social project and we choose to start a School book project supporting the local schools.

You can read my race report Elf Autherntique Adventure - Philippines 1999 . The race certainly had an effect on my life and resulted in me forming and managing my own team "International Adventures" who competed in some of the longest and hardest races in the history of the sport. Our finest moment was finally crossing the line as a complete time in a race in Amazonia December 2001.

My second dream was achieve earlier planned when I accepted early retirement in 2000 in order to pursue my passion for adventure.

Yes these dreams did not cost me any money but the company spent 50,000 UKD on entering two teams in the race and every race that my teams entered cost an average of 12,000 UKPD with entry fees travel etc.

Traditional ways to fund your dream

  • create a saving accounts, say you are planning a special holiday, you need to work out a Budget and then divide it by the time remaining between now and when you will need to have the money, divide one by the other and then you will know what you need to put aside each week or month.
  • Pay with your credit card this is the easiest and most common method, however even in this period of record low rates it may take you a long time to pay off.
  • An overdraft is usually easy to arrange and some banks automatically pre-approve overdrafts up to certain limits for customers with good standing.
  • Take out an unsecured loan, sometimes know as payday loans, not recommended at all due to the extremely high interest rate charges, which quickly mount up.
  • Sell items that you no longer need or use, it is amazing how much clutter people have in their lives, I have moved house many time and its often good to hold garage sales
  • Take out a mortgage or a second mortgage on your property releasing some of the equity, not quite so easy at the moment unless you own commercial property.

Introducing Crowdfunding

The concept of Crowdfunding as its name implies is when a large number of people come together to support a particular project by investing or donating small contributions of money.

Crowdfunding started in 1997 when a rock band unable to afford to tour the USA, raised $60,000 from their fans since that time hundreds of project ranging from journalism to films and even a Formula 1 racing team have been supported by Crowdfunding.

Crowdfunding moved online about 3 years ago and has expanded rapidly and now covers three distinct areas:-

  1. Equity crowdfunding - People will invest in a project in return for a share in a business
  2. Debt crowdfunding - Project managers will borrow money from private investors rather than banks and and the investors will receive their capital back with interest or in some cases social recognition of their funding.
  3. Donation crowdfunding- Here people are donating for no other reason than that they support the cause behind the project and this is becoming by far the most popular type of crowdfunding, which is within the reach of everyone.

Introducing Shared Crowdfunding

Normally you would have to advertise you own crowdfunding project, however when you join we share crowdfunding you project is linked together in a group of other projects which promote one another which helps to swell your donations.

The one thing I really like about the program is that you have to give in order to receive and the more you give the faster your own project will grow.
