Childrens Sailing Paphos Cyprus

Yesterday's summer school session was held in very light winds, with 5 boats on the water and some of the optimists being sailed double handed. It did however allow the boats to sail quite close together, including swapping boats whilst on the water.

The light winds put a premium on knowing where the wind is coming from, and trimming the sails to use what little wind there was proved challenging at time and will need covering further in future sessions,

After a short break and an impromptu game of football the final session was to carry out a capsize drill. This is a vital drill for any sailor, being able to right a capsized dinghy and return to the shore without outside assistance, is a skill which develops independence and self confidence. Further drills will be carried out in strander winds and further from the shore.

Friday marked the end of this particular course, and some of the children will be taking a break, whilst others will be returning next week, when an additional hour will be added to the sessions to make better use of the winds which strengthening just after midday.

Next week, I will be running a full weeks course concentrating on steering, sailing forwards and backwards and sail trim, hopefully the wind gods will be favourable. Will also be arranging a few games to add an element of fun and competition, together with basic skills of rigging a boat and Ropework. Depending on the weather and the pupils taking part we might even venture out beyond the breakwater, to sample sailing in waves.
