Children's Summer Sailing School Paphos

Yesterday I stood in as an Instructor to teach a small group of children how to sail optimist dinghies during their summer school held by Sail First in Paphos Cyprus. It has been some time since i have last helped young children take their first steps in the sport of sailing at it was amazing to see how quickly they progressed and the enjoyment they had as they took control of their simple boats and conquered the wind.

There were a few near panic times, when they forgot about the no go sailing zone which allowed them to be carried towards the rocks, but with some gentle coaching they all returned safely to the shore.

The most important aspect for me to teach is that children should be able to sail upwind as soon as possible as it is all to easy to sail in the direction the wind is blowing. The sailing area at Geroskipou beach is protected by breakwaters and shared with both powerboats and swimmers, so care has to be taken to avoid interfering with other water users.

The optimist dinghy is ideal for the task as it is a robust box shaped pram dinghy, manoeuvrable but very forgiving. Children can sit in and as the winds get stronger on the sides. It is a great boat to give children the independence to discover for themselves the joys of sailing, and seeing the smiles and shout of excitement as the boats pick up speed is most rewarding.

I am looking forward to helping improve their skills in the future.
