Memories of a Barefoot Pied Piper
Growing up on the East Coast of North Carolina was great because even at Christmas time I could lay out in the sun and run around barefoot all that I wanted.
I remember as a child ranging from the age of 5-15, I would usually never be found wearing shoes. At that time, I could even go into a store without shoes.
I lived in a area that was not paved but consisted of dirt roads and had multi-sized stones thrown throughout the streets.
Of course, I am not speaking of the "horse and buggy" era, I am not THAT old, LOL, even though I have my days.
I am speaking of the trailer park that I grew up in.
NC is known for it's mobile home parks. If I remember correctly, it was even in the Guiness Book of World Records for the place with the most mobile homes in the area.
Anyway, I would run around all the time, on all those rocks and it would never phase me. Now, I can't stand to walk on small gravel to my car.
Also, I used to be known as the "Pied Piper of the Trailer Park".
For some reason, I always had dogs and cats following me all over the place. I wouldn't necessarily feed them or anything like that, in fact, my mother hated cats and I only actually owned one "old mutt" my entire childhood.
However, I did at one time or another, also own a fluffy white rabbit and a few chicks around Easter time, at least until the stray cats got to my chicks and ate them. (Yeah, "boo hoo").
I just loved animals and guess they sensed that. In fact, I think I warmed up to the animals faster than I did to humans.
I would spend most of my time shooting my basketball into an old hoop nailed onto a tree in my drive way.
I remember playing in the sand in my driveway, building a small community of castles that were surrounded by sand boundaries and moats.
I also remember building forts either in the woods or in this one particular DEEEEP ditch in front of my trailer.
There are times while growing up, I didn't feel as if I had the best in life, but I know that all was being done to give me what was possible.
Looking back from time to time, I cherish those moments that I spent running around that dirt and rock covered trailer park as part of what created the person I am today.
We each must take what we have been through in life and grow from those opportunities given or maybe even the from the lack of opportunities given and become the type of person that we would like others to look up to.
Hope you enjoy my walk down memory lane, it brought back a smile on my face.

| | | | | Interesting childhood. As a child I had so much callous on my feet that shoes actually hurt when I wore them. There were times on the mountain I did wear moccasins, they didn't hurt. For the most part like you, life was bare feet. Like you, childhood also made me who I am today. |
