Is There a Time When Migraines Control Your Life?
How many times has a migraine headache controlled your life?
I have not accomplished "squat" thanks to the migraine headache that has plague my life this week. It makes me wonder just how many other people have migraines that incapacitate them for who knows how long and how they deal with them.
I have personally experienced these "major" migraines for most of my life. For me, certain foods seem to be the trigger. However, there are occasions that a change in the weather or change in the seasons will cause them to flare up.
My sister's migraines are caused by changes in the barometric pressure. She even has them so severe that she has to receive special shots to get them under control.
Along with myself, my sister and one other person in particular that I know of, when these "migraines" flare up, they pretty much put us out of commission. The slightest noise or light drives us crazy. We can always tell the difference between a regular headache and a migraine.
A headache usually starts with a feeling of gradual pressure or tightness in the head. This dull ache can then increase, and sometimes feel as though there is a tremendous amount of pressure – similar to a pressure cooker.
Headaches are usually felt on both sides of the head, which is different from a migraine headache. A migraine headache is usually felt only on one side of the head.
Tension headaches can last for several hours or days, and can happen every day, or only once per week or less frequently.
Migraines usually range from occurring every few days or as infrequently as once or twice a year. The pain from a migraine may also last for many hours and up to several days at a time. Migraines may start early in the morning, or may even start in the middle of the night, causing a person to awaken from the excruciating pain.
Nausea, vomiting, and difficulty in being able to think clearly can many times accompany a migraine headache, but these symptoms are rarely associated with the average tension headache.
In addition to these symptoms, migraines (and sometimes tension headaches) can also cause a sensitivity to light (which is called photo phobia) and/or sensitivity to sounds or loud noises (which is called phonophobia.)
I find that keeping pressure on my temples and keeping myself in as much darkness as I possibly can will sometimes help my headaches from getting worse.
Before head pain even starts, some people may experience a non-painful sensation, called an aura. This aura can be a visual sensation like forms of lights or colors. Auras don’t always occur. In fact, migraines without these auras are the most common type that people experience.
While females are found to be three times more likely to have headaches, doctors believe that female hormones may, at times, play a role in their cause. This important finding has helped research direct efforts to drugs that counteract the powerful effects of these hormones.
Migraines have also been found to run in families, and researchers are now exploring the possibility of finding the “migraine gene” in hopes of targeting more effective treatments.
If you find that your headaches prevent you from going about your daily routine, you really should seek help from your doctor. Immediate attention from a physician is required if the headache is particularly severe, such as the worst headache of your life, including so much pain that you feel physically incapacitated, or have a stiff neck and/or fever.
Also seek help if the headache is associated with any change in your neurological function, such as any paralysis, numbness, slurred speech, or loss of sight. It is important for physicians to determine that the headache is not related to any other type of physical problem that could be causing the pain.
I am one that knows just how difficult it is to try and accomplish anything when having a migraine. It is even hard to hold your eyes open when having a migraine.
If you happen to experience migraines, please respond. How do you cope? I would like to know.

 | | Darlene - Personally have only had once in my life, not nice. I'm sure you've tried many things (food allergies?). I'm sending prayers on your behalf. Thanks for sharing! |
| | | | | Migraines: my home remedies are lots of water, ginger tea (steep 10 slices fresh ginger with 1 ltr water) and then sip it during the day - hot or cold.
For other work a cup of coffee at first sign on the horizon, I've heard
Others swear by Immunotec's Xtra Sharp, a herbal/mineral tonic that just does the trick for them.
I guess it depends on the person - we all are different, so there is no One-fits-all approach |
| | | | | I used to also suffer from Migraines. There wasn't much that I could do about them except go to a dark, quiet room and lay down. About the only thing that has fixed them for me was that I moved to a different part of the country. I know that isn't possible for everyone though. I was just lucky that moving fixed it. |
| | | | | I had Migraines for years..am very familiar with putting my head under a pillow, closing the shades and telling everyone to leave me alone! Wish I knew then what I know now!
It is more about finding some solutions, Darleen than merely coping since there are at least 5 different kinds of headaches I can help you identify and find some solutions. If you'd like to chat, just contact me.There is hope ! |
| | | | | This migranes...ohhh turn your life upside down |
| | | | | Me too, I have not had a migraine in a few months, When I do get a migraine my whole life stops, if its at night I will try to rest in a very quite and dark room and I can't put my head down, so I rest my head on a pillow but sit up staight. |
| | | | | I am Solidary with your Problem.... A Big Hug Darleen..... |
