Will March come in like a Lion or come in like a Lamb?
With the onset of the month of March, I am reminded of the old saying I have heard forever:
"In like a Lion out like a Lamb", or "In like a Lamb out like a Lion.
As each March rolls around I try and make a conscious effort to remember how March comes in like and how it goes out. I must say that those times that I remember to do this, I have seen that for the most part the saying is True.
I am not exactly sure where this saying came from, and from what I have looked into, not sure if anyone does.
I found that this phrase has its origins with the constellations Leo, the Lion, and Aries, the ram or lamb. It has to do with the relative positions of these constellations in the sky at the beginning and end of the month.
I have also found that it became known due to how the weather was followed so that farmers knew when and what to plant for each season.
Guess it really doesn't matter how the saying came about or if it is even true, but I find it amusing to see if the saying holds true each year.
March is definitely an unpredictable month for weather. I have personally seen some of the biggest ice and snow storms hit in March, but then there have been plenty of windy and very summer like days during the month also.
So, if you happen to remember, it might be an interesting experiment in old-fashioned weather observation kind of way, to pay attention to this particular March. See if the saying holds true once again.

March - Lion and Lamb
by Joyce P. Hale
MARCH has tumbled on the scene,
exits mild, but enters mean...
Winter waves a fierce goodbye,
while robins promise Spring is nigh.
Daffodils are peeking through...
forsythia is budding, too.
Clouds are racing, sun is cool,
in like a lion is the rule!
Birds all seem to know it's time
to answer Mother Nature's sign;
they listen to an innate command,
and there goes March, out like a lamb.

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb
by Lorie Hill
March roars in like a lion
So fierce,
The wind so cold,
It seems to pierce.
The month rolls on
And Spring draws near,
And March goes out
Like a lamb so dear
