What's worse than a pregnant women smoking?
Air Pollution
Exhaust gas and ground level ozone, according to a study by researchers at the
University of Umea in northern Sweden, increase the risk of preterm birth.
A survey was carried out in Stockholm, cities - a relatively low exhaust gas -
that shows the ozone, the gas further, affect the fetus than the mother who
smoked.
Held in cities around the world that are high in pollution, results are showing
increased risk of preterm birth than has been shown previously.
The study of Umea, the ground level ozone, clarifies the result in the risk of
pregnancy.
"If we add the effect of ozone concentration and are exposed to high exhaust,
it has a larger effect than smoking," the researchers said.
Ground level ozone, disrupts the development of the placenta, and can affect
the time of birth. In late pregnancy, it has been found that the exhaust gas
delivery of traffic, can cause inflammation of the respiratory tract of the
mother.
Further studies in premature infants tend to carry an increased risk of
respiratory problems such as asthma.
According to the Children's Hospital in Stockholm Sachsska, prescription of
asthma medication is more common among premature infants than those that are
full term.
