A Caring Heart Has No Boundaries
A women who had just given birth, asked if she could see her baby.
The baby was brought to her, nicely swaddled in a small blanket. She moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, and gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.
However, only his appearance was marred, and time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect.
One day, he rushed home from school and flung himself into his mother’s arms.
His mother sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks. He blurted out that a boy had called him a freak.
Even though he was born with this misfortune, he grew up to be a handsome young man.
He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music.
The boy’s father went to see the family physician. Asking if anything could be done, the doctor said, "I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured".
A search began to find a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man.
Two years went by. Then, his father told him that his mother and him had found someone who would donate the ears that he needed. But he told the boy that it was a secret about who donated them.
The operation was a success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and his school and college days became a series of triumphs.
Years later, he married and entered the diplomatic service.
One day he asked his father, “I must know! Who gave so much for me? I could never do enough for him.”
“I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know … not yet.”
The secret was kept for years, but then the day did come … one of the darkest days that a son must endure.
As he stood with his father over his mother’s casket, the father, slowly and tenderly, stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to reveal that the mother had no outer ears.
“Your mother always said that she was glad that she never let anyone cut her hair, and nobody ever thought that your mother was any less beautiful, did they?”
Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance, but in the heart.
A true and caring person does not need or care about recognition or applause for helping someone else. Just by them being able to help another, is what fills their heart with joy.
