Be Careful What You Do With Your Words (Language Has Meaning Until It Doesn't)

Be Careful What You Do With Your Words

I'm sure you've all probably heard the old refrain of 'Be careful what you say' or 'Words Matter'.  Well, yes they do.  Before 45 became president I was having discussions about, what I saw to be, a growing trend towards lying in our society today.  It seems to be getting more and more wide spread and accepted.  The key point here is 'Accepted'.  Want to know what happens when lying becomes acceptable in our daily affairs?  We get a president like 45.  He actually said on nationwide television that he tells the truth when he can.  I say, when it suits him.

Here's where he's taking us.

The Soviet Union—is a world where words lost their meaning.

In the USSR, elections were mandatory. They involved showing up at the so-called "polling place," receiving a pre-filled ballot, and depositing it in the ballot box.

This was called the "free expression of citizen will." And yet, there was nothing free about it.

It did not constitute expression. It had no relationship to citizen or will.

The effect of calling this ritual either "an election" or the "free expression of citizen will" created a new meaning for those words—a meaning understood only by those forced to take part in the ritual itself. It eviscerated their true meaning understood by the world's democracies.

Today, in the United States, we have a president with a similar tendency to take words and phrases and turn them into their opposite: "fake news," "witch hunt," "enemy of the people."

In Soviet Russia, it was first words of politics that were distorted. Then, actions, dates, and identities were altered, and history was rewritten. I fear that there will come a time when we as individuals or groups discard certain words because they have been robbed of their meaning: freedom, truth, lie, fact, war, peace, democracy, law.
