Great Leaders are Great Followers

To be a great leader, you must first learn how to be a great follower. I learned this valuable lesson as an Army officer.

Before you can expect others to follow your lead, you must learn how to follow someone else’s lead. You must become an obedient student.

First you are the student (the follower) and then you are the teacher (the leader). If you won't follow someone else, why would you expect someone to follow you?

You must learn to take your eyes off yourself and focus on other people instead. You must adopt the servant leadership mentality. Focus on helping others reach their objectives and goals.

Be a TEAM PLAYER. Put your own goals and desires on the back-burner and focus on helping others get where they want to be. That is vitally important.

No one is born a leader. Yes, some people have special skills and talents that will help them excel in leadership positions, but leadership is LEARNED.

You learn leadership by watching other leaders in action. You learn by following another leader. You learn my trying to become a leader yourself. You learn by making mistakes and learning from each mistake.

Study any great leader and you will quickly discover that they are “following” another great leader. Someone mentors them, coaches them and guides them. This could be a mentor, peer or boss.

You need to do the same thing if you want to become a leader. If you have a boss, be loyal to them and help them achieve their objectives. If you have followers, serve them. Help them grow, learn and develop.

Be humble. Be gracious. Keep learning. Serve others. Do those four things and you will become a great leader!
