How to Get More Referrals in Any Business

Referrals are the lifeblood of any business. In today’s article, I would like to share my favorite way to get more referrals for your business. Let’s get started.

Without a doubt, the easiest way to get more referrals is to form strategic alliances with other entrepreneurs in non-competing businesses. For example, let’s suppose you are a personal trainer and are trying to find more clients.

The first thing you should do is make a list of non-competing businesses that relate to your target market.  Here are a few examples I can think of:

  • Nutrition stores, such as vitamin stores
  • Exercise equipment stores
  • Book Stores
  • Clothing Stores
  • Doctors
  • Nutritionist
  • Herbal Remedies Store
  • Network Marketer Selling Weight Loss Products
  • Chiropractor

Try to come up with at least 50 ideas. Once you finish your list, your next step is to find 2-3 entrepreneurs in each category and contact them.

You want to try and book an appointment to meet with them. During the meeting you want to discuss forming a strategic alliance with them. In other words, you would recommend your “personal trainer clients” to their business (non-competing) and they would refer their clients to your business. This creates a win-win deal for both parties involved.

Please know that this is a very common practice in the business world. For instance, every time you get a bill in the mail, you probably notice 1-2 inserts from other companies, in the envelope. These companies have a relationship with your biller, whereupon they refer business to each other.

You should apply this same concept in your business. The major benefit of doing this is that both entrepreneurs get more customers.  I use this method myself and have found it very helpful. Best of all, it’s free.
