Four Different Leadership Styles in Network Marketing

Today, I'm going to discuss the different leadership styles in network marketing. 

When it comes to MLM Success, leadership is key. You don't have to be Mr. Charisma to succeed, but you do need to know how to bring out the best in others. I believe your leadership boils down to your ability to influence others. 

I learned in the Army that you have to lead people in different ways, based upon their skill-set and motivation!  There are many different ways to lead people, but what I've covered below are the different methods that I’ve used in my military and network marketing career.

Directing – This is what you do with your brand new distributors. You tell them exactly what they need to do.  You must realize that most people in network marketing have never worked for themselves before, so they don’t know what to do. You aren’t their boss, but you need to be direct and give them specific instructions to follow, until they are self-sufficient in the business. For instance, step one is to do this. Then, step two is to do this. 

Coaching – As your new distributor starts to work on their own, you are going to coach them.  You might do a three-way call with them and let them listen/watch you in action. You still provide guidance, but they take some initiative and figure out some things on their own. 

Supporting  – This is when your distributor has a solid understanding of the business and they just need to call you when they need help or get a little bit of guidance/encouragement. You are there to answer questions and encourage them. Basically, you're their cheerleader.

Delegating – This is the ultimate leadership style.  It’s when you have someone who is highly motivated and trained and self-sufficient. They are independent of you and don’t need you (much).  When you need something done, you can give them a task and feel 100% confident they will get it done and get it done right. These folks take responsibility and teach and train their own teams. This is duplication at its finest. 

Ken Blanchard talks about these leadership styles in his book “Situational Leadership and the One Minute Manager.”  I highly suggest you order a copy of that book and read it.  It’s very powerful.  He goes into a lot of detail about each leadership style.

Final Thoughts

The bottom line is that you must become a leader first, if you want to attract other leaders into your network marketing business. In addition, you must lead every person on your team differently, because everyone is different.  

If you have children, you understand what I am talking about. An approach that might work with one child might not work with your other child. You must be creative and flexible with your leadership approach.
