Obamacare Christian Alternatives

Published on 8/30/2016

When the Affordable Care Act was passed, better known as Obamacare, there was a lot of complaints that the law required coverage for things like abortion that most Christians objected to paying for due to their beliefs.

That’s one of the reasons alternatives to traditional health insurance were made part of the law.

According to the annual Kaiser Family Foundation report, average annual family premiums for employer-based health insurance have risen by $4,865 since 2008.

As we approach the 2017 open enrollment period the trend is disturbing. Fewer companies, higher premiums, fewer doctors participating in the plan and much larger copayments and deductibles.

One county in Arizona is (so far) the worst example…

400,000 people live in Pinal County Arizona. These folks have NO insurance companies that will offer Obamacare (as of this date) - see story here

That means that the residents will be breaking the law by not purchasing something that doesn’t exist!

Besides people in that circumstance, even more people are dropping their health insurance voluntarily and are looking for alternatives.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the number of people enrolling in alternatives to Obamacare was around 200,000 in 2010 but grew to more than 500,000 at the beginning of 2016.

"A growing number of people are turning to health-care ministries to cover their medical expenses instead of buying traditional insurance," the Journal reports.

These “health-care ministries” operate outside the insurance system and are NOT regulated by state insurance departments.

They provide a health-care cost-sharing arrangement among people with similarly held beliefs.

These plans also have the advantages of significantly lower cost and larger networks.

They DO qualify under the law and therefore the members are NOT subject to the tax penalty of not carrying an “Obamacare” policy.

My intention is to spread the word about these alternatives to what has become a very expensive system with diminishing choices.

There are 6 plans that I’ve found and I’ll review them in future posts including the advantages and disadvantages as I see them.
