Sales without systems? Please no...

After 36 years in the insurance business I’ve seen a lot of agents come and go.


Many of them were great sales people but such more business people that they ran out of cash before they figured “it” out.


“It” in most businesses, possibly your business, is systems.


I saw it again just a couple weeks ago. Young agent, quit after his 3rd year in the business. He grossed about $12,000 his first year, $21,000 the second and $35,000 his 3rd.


He now has a job (a sales job) with a $40,000 salary and some paid health insurance for him and his young family. The health insurance is worth about $8,000 I calculated.


If he works hard (and I’m sure he will) he can make $50,000 to $60,000 next year before taxes and probably increase his income a little every year but...


When I looked this his “failed” insurance business he was actually setting on a growing “goldmine” and didn’t even realize it.


3 glaring problems I found after talking to him for an hour...


  • He was selling one product to his clients when he could have been selling 3 or 4.
  • He was doing far too many minimum wage tasks himself that he should have been delegating.
  • Perhaps worst of all, it turned out, he had LOTS of quality leads that he had generated but never followed up with!


Improving any of these 3 areas would have increased his income by at least double. Addressing all 3 of them would have dramatically increased his income.


Now he has a sales manager who is providing him with systems and requiring him to do some things to keep his job that he could have profited from if he had done them in his own business!


Funny how that works.


So if you are frustrated that you have lot’s of good “marketing momentum” but feel like you are not “cashing in”, I encourage you to review whether or not you have systems in place.


If YOU don’t have the systems you know you should, don’t despair.


Congratulations that you have at least recognized the problem.


If you need some help with your “next step” there are lot’s of resources like coaches and software and supervisors and “up lines” and organizations like SCORE and guys like me (depending on your industry).


In the Bible (Matthew 7:7) it says "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”


If you dream of successfully building your passion into a business that will provide for you and your family, don’t give up  Find what you need to put together the systems, make a lot of money and do good things with it.
