How Important Is Recognition To You?

As human beings we are always appreciative of recognition, it does something to our psyche to be recognized. It means something.

What is recognition?

Recognition is honoring people for a job well done giving or adding to their sense of value and feeling of appreciation.

Recognition takes many forms just to name a few:

You can be recognized as a familiar face

For a job well done and of high quality

Work you have done that is recognized in tangible form

Public acknowledgement of certain levels of achievement or for being helpful.

Employee recognition which causes productivity to rise

If you use children as an example: watch their little faces when they do something of which they are proud and you respond positively.  The comment that immediately comes to mind is that they light up like a Christmas tree.  You see it in their happy faces, the way they walk - a skip and a hop, continuing or improve upon what they feel good about and are encouraged to do more, and all because of your recognition. That is the importance of recognition in its simplest form.

"Be so busy giving recognition that you don’t need it.”

- Jim Rohn

The fact that adults are no different can be seen as the child in you – that which we recognize in ourselves.

While we hope that others around us recognize our value that recognition must mainly come from within us. We have to still our minds know who we really are and the importance of our own self-worth. Without such self-recognition you will always be seeking and dependent upon approval from others which can lead to dissatisfaction, disappointment, insecurity and the loss of sense of  yourself.

"When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world. Your innermost sense of self, of who you are, is inseparable from stillness. This is the I Am that is deeper than name and form."  -  Eckhart Tolle (Stillness Speaks)

So do not worry when you do something of which you are proud and are thinking “I have done well” - and there is no recognition. Just know that whatever you do, have done well and from the heart with good intentions you are worthy. You are important and you recognize you.

The importance of recognition therefore begins with you. Everyone likes to be recognized, likes to think that others see your worth and what you are capable of.  Do not be dependent on recognition that may or may not be.
