Should you decline more Opportunities Than You accept?



This is a question to which serious thought should be given.

Why would you want to decline opportunities?

Why would you want to start your career by accepting every opportunity, every invitation?

There are a few ways to look at the above questions:

Could it be that the opportunities and invitations presented allow you, being new, to become known in your circle, to brand yourself?

Could it be that you are using those opportunities and invitations to build relationships? And, therefore put your career on speed dial?

?When you first begin your career, accepting opportunities depending on your career path, could be that you are in a learning phase and wish to acquire much knowledge about the do's and don'ts and best practices as you can.? Different people approach things from different experience and different perspective. You then must sift, and filter information gathered around you and your career.

There comes a point, you deem appropriate, when you begin to decline certain invitations and opportunities to develop your own thoughts, build your experience based on what you are thinking, the knowledge you have acquired in relation to your career path.

Being exposed to opportunities, I believe often trigger creative ideas on which you can expand.  You never know until you begin to challenge yourself.

There are a few schools of thought which demonstrates that to decline more opportunities than you accept it is not as cut and dry as it appears to some and could be a bit of a challenge to others.


One such thought is expressed in: Arianna Huffington's post?


?Say Yes Often in the Beginning

“When you're first starting out, say yes to just about everything that comes your way. "Want to join a committee?" Sure. "Do you want to attend a networking event?" Absolutely.

Don't assume that something is below you or that the work is beneath you. You never know what small opportunity might lead to something big.

Of course, many of the invitations you accept won't go anywhere and they might feel like a complete waste of time. But, you're likely to discover that some opportunities you thought were dead ends are likely to open new doors.

To say yes more often doesn't mean you need to say yes 100 percent of the time, however. Overextending yourself could be a recipe for early burnout.

So be reasonable about what invitations you accept. Establish healthy boundaries that prevent pushy co-workers or a toxic boss?from taking advantage of your eagerness.

But say yes to opportunities that are outside your comfort zone. Even when you are filled with self-doubt you might find you're more capable than you give yourself credit for.”

In the above excerpt is a suggested guide to why you should say yes in the beginning as you decide whether you should decline more opportunities than you accept.

I learned a valuable lesson in school. My commercial teacher told the class. "Don't be a specialist, if you are working in an office and there is the opportunity to learn a skill or something you don't know, offer to help so you can learn and add to you skill base." I will always remember Mr. McCalla who has since passed. I did just that and learned a lot along the way. Plus there is just something about teaming up with people of like minds, with a willingness to share and understand.  The communication is different.
