What's In A Handshake?

Handshaking though common is not universal.
What's in a Handshake

As recent as over the weekend I had an experience which keeps popping into my head and I thought it worthy of sharing, and is about shaking hands

I was sitting the person was standing and I didn't have to look at the person to know they were not smiling or even looking at me. I felt more of a kind of indifference.

First a little background. I have been exposed to people who when they shake your hand it is a lifeless, barely touching one and I often wonder why they bother. my mind would then go into dissecting the hand, and I would sometimes make the mental note not to attempt a shake of hands with such a personality again.

I quite unconsciously and in my quiet moments study people, and especially if the incident keeps recurring in my mind. in fact as a teenager I used to list one of my hobbies as studying people because as a specie I find us to be quite fascinating. And people would preface their comments to me by saying "And don't bother analyze me."

About a year ago while with an internet marketing company a Transformational coach - William Wood joined the program. The various teachings involved studying that of interpreting body languages and the importance of listening as an all-inclusive skill, which may be utilized in many ways. What that did for me was bring to the fore a natural ability which somehow I had buried, and more and more I feel should be developed.

There are different types of handshakes

Here are just a few.

What's in a handshake -

a) A universally spoken language of greetings

b) The importance of a handshake is to convey trust, balance, and equality.

c) A handshake can give you some clues about the person you are shaking hand with.

d) Learning to give a good handshake can go a long way in helping to restore self esteem. there is no shake, no squeeze, not even a pinch, and it gives the feeling you are holding a dead fish instead of a hand.

"One of the most telling things about a person is how they say hello, handshakes." Miguel

This person I met on the weekend extended and shook hands in a rather lifeless form, looking away from me, but I paid little attention as we were in a very jovial group of seniors (I don't mean old). But then when it was time to depart the same kind of handshake took place again and it impacted me so it was difficult to ignore. As I was drifting off to sleep in the wee hour of the morning the whole scenario replayed in my mind and I thought it fitting to express my thoughts.

The kind of handshake I am talking about has happened often enough for most to relate. It is startling how long it takes to erase a bad handshake from memory.

A bad handshake is hard to forget!

So you can keep your fake handshakes

Such negative impressions are important because they help us to formulate a picture of who you meet along the way for the first time.

In this story I have shared I am the first to admit that it could be any number of reasons from anxiety, though I did not sense that; lack of confidence, guilt or just being an introvert.

Rule of thumb: Always maintain eye contant when you handshake.
