What Are The Health Benefits Of Ochro That Is Easily Grown In Your Backyard OR Kitchen Garden?

Our everyday foods provide great benefits to our health yet we ignore or are not aware of those benefits that can contribute to our overall health.

Today I am going to share with you Ochro, also known as lady fingers, or spelt ochra, and that can be grown in your backyard or kitchen garden.

I grew up in Jamaica with my mom always using ochra, and it was always a part of our Saturday soup that is called "Pepperpot" Saturdays and Wednesdays were soup days for us.

The ingredients for this Pepperpot soup were Kale, callaloo, ochro, sometimes freshly caught conch, or salted beef, coconut milk and seasonings in the form of herbs like thyme, eschallot and scotch bonnet peper.

Of course, provisions ( which I now refer to as obstacles, only because I love soup without the provisions) like sweet potato, yams, dumplings and breadfruit if in season, were added for a full meal

We always looked forward to our Saturday soup, and was well fed not knowing how nutritious our meal was.

Information on the internet

With the advent of the Internet you can find all kinds of researched information that tells you the positive or negative benefits of the foods we eat.

I continue to use okro but not often enough. Being told recently that my bad cholesterol is a little high. (I have to tell you a little secret. I avoid taking drugs...prescribed or otherwise) I decided to restart the use of okra in various cooking methods. But first I began using it in water - cutting a few fingers and setting it in a glass of water overnight, drinking it first thing in the mornings. Can't do any harm..right?

I recently came across an article about Okra (Ochro) and will share with you the top 6 health benefits named of Okra:

1. Reduces Blood Sugar Levels
2. Lowers Bad Cholosterol
3.Treats Leukorrohea
4. Promotes a Healthy Pregnancy
5. Prevents Liver Disease
6. Makes Your Hair Soft and Shiny

There are many other benefits in using Okra and there are different ways of preparing it. I prepare the Okra for use by leaving it in a bowl of water with added vinegar for about 15 minutes to hopefully remove any residual chemicals that may have been used during growth. That is if I did not grow it myself.
I then remove the head and cut in small pieces.

Recipe

I tend to use a lot of garlic so I do the following with about 18 fingers of Okra:
a) Cut up 3 phegs of garlic and saute in coconut oil
b) Chop tomatoes, onion, sweetpepper, scotch bonnet pepper and a bit of ginger.
c) Add to garlic and combine for a minute of 2
c) Add Okra let simmer for awhile then stir to mix seasoning. Simmer a while longer for about 5 to 10 minutes then turn of the stove.

 

Notice I did not include salt or any un-natural seasonings. which allows for the natural flavors of the seasoning to be combined with the Okro. You can also add a little celery for overall flavor. 

Another way we use Ochro in Jamaica is to steam it whole with fish, but there are a variety of ways in which ochro can be prepared.


One other thing I do from time to time is chip up young Okra in my salad.
