The Foundational Influence In The Lives Of Children

Factors  contributing to foundational influence in the lives of children

In most cases children within our societies most probably have a mom and dad or at least one parent, some siblings and  a set of grandparents. Also available to them is a radio in the house a telephone - these days everyone has a cell phone a television or two. Their parents sound like the people they see on television, in the cinemas which they are taken to and of course social media - all contributing to foundational influence.

In the past writers of a spiritual or other persuasion often convey their message through story telling illustrating their points with parables drawn from great teachers of the past. Not so now! Access to social media impacts all that.

I have often wondered about the kinds of animations shown these days to or is said to be for children, words and phrases used, the animals depicting sometimes negative emotions, violence and absorbed by children at a tender age. Correctly or incorrectly they assume aspects of what they are viewing - not being able to make sense of it, but nevertheless enjoying every bit of it and it stays in their subconscious minds. Our minds are so constructed that we unconsciously absorb tiny bits of these interactions and experiences during the early years of our lives, creating foundational influence.

What we absorb often manifests itself in later years. Circumstances do not make a man, they reveal him.

If you were to examine carefully the actions of the young you will realize that they translated what they have been exposed to and act out unconsciously, or deliberately as is convenient to them in many ways taking on the image of their favorite characters - positive or negative.

Do you think that all this foundational influence contributes to negative attitudes and in later years for some, criminal activities? It sounds far-fetched but not so foreign to the concept of foundational influence.

A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.

Chinese Proverb quotes  | added by: Oswald

As adults within the society we have a responsibility to the type of  foundational influence we wield in the lives of our chidren. Positive and negative - drawing a paralell of do's and don'ts and imparting a sense of value.

Children should never be underestimated. They think and without positive influence and proper guidance can translate according to their understanding, being overwhelmed and confused by the daily happenings within our societies and the outcome is not always what is expected or is desirable.

How do we address this matter of foundational influence
The approach differs according to circumstances, parents, teachers and those who have influence within the society for we all have a responsitility

First - while we are still in a position of influence we choose what we expose our children to.

Second - we ensure we watch with them or are aware of their exposure and engage them in discussions about it.

ClassroomAs a young child in primary school we use to be taken  to the movies one day a week.  On returning to school there would be a general discussion around what we saw. We discussed what we thought about the movie and discussed the moral of the story - what would we do given certain situations. This helped in our thought process, answering questions we may have had and guidance in simple explanation was given.

We would on returning home tell our parent/s about the movie we saw and there would ensue a conversation about what teacher said, and of course what we thought. Parental response often assist in broadening your thinking, sometimes confirming discussions held in school.

We have to be ever present in our children's lives and they have to know that you are there for them and believe in them.

When we have this kind of interaction with our children it is the first stage of gettting them to talk with you about almost anything. A continuance of this lays the foundation for developing a strong sense of self. So talk with your childen not at them or down to them. Encourage them to talk to you.

The first influence should be from within the home although the competition these days is very strong.

This is where their sense of value, awareness of self and confidence in knowing who they are is developed and the foundational influence comes into play in later years.

Finally, foundational influence can lead to expressed values like trust, tolerance, self respect, diligence, courtesy, loyalty and cooperation just to name a few.
