Why You Should Read And Encourage Good Reading Habits

Escaping into a Good Book

We encourage good reading habits by developing our minds and expanding our thinking much like what we do online when we supply and  receive good content.

Some Effects of encouraging Good Reading Habits

“When we read a story, we inhabit it. The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story. And this is possible because the story's voice makes everything its own.”

- John Berger

Have you ever found yourself reading a book that you find interesting and have difficulty not skipping chapters to see what is in the other chapters of the book?

I used to read a lot - meaning I sometimes read more than a book a day  and they were a variety.  I was always caught up in the excitement of what I read.  Once the book proved interesting it was to me like watching a good movie in which you get caught up in the scenes.
That is when you know the book is a good read. You hear and see nothing outside the book.

“It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations--something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite  different from their own.”

- Katherine Patterson

Growing up my kids were widely read and their gifts were that of books which laid the foundation for fertile minds.  This is why you should  encourage good reading habits.

I developed the habit of a Sunday brunch when they were quite young, cooking my favourite Jamaican breakfast. The intent was to get everyone in one place for a few hours of quality time and without distractions.  Our Time - It meant that from about 10:00 a.m there was breakfast/brunch until sometimes 1 p.m.  because of the discussions around the table which moved from one subject to another with some strong views, analysis and explanations coming forth from different perspectives.

It was quite interesting hearing the views coming from young minds as to how they saw things playing out in the society and the politics. I really enjoyed those days through to them achieving adulthood.

"All the best stories in the world are but one story in reality -- the story of escape. It is the only thing which interests us all and at all times, how to escape.”

- Arthur Christopher Benson

In my early years I got in the habit of  putting on 3 LPs ( long playing records) on my Turn Table and having chosen the book I wanted to read would simply sit awhile listening to instrumental music - no words. That would get me to a place where I would  eventually begin to read and after awhile become so  immersed in my reading that I no longer heard the music.

"To read a book for the first time is to make an acquaintance with a new friend. To read it for a second time is to meet an old one."

- Chinese saying

"To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all of the miseries of life."

- W Somerset Maugham

For years when I didn't feel like talking to anyone I would grab a book and  begin reading. In fact, I admittedly used to hide behind reading books.  You see that was my way of tuning out on what I did not wish to be a part of.

Reading then  served its purpose in many ways as I had a small group of friends who when they visited we had some healthy and challenging conversations which often forced us into researching subjects for the next time we met.

So I let me introduced you to three books to encourage good reading habits, develop your mindset and expand your thinking. I have at least one already. They are, and I encourage you to acquire them:

Think and Grow rich  - Napoleon Hill
Subconscious Mind   - Joseph Murphy

Wake up and Live!    - Dorothea Brande
