A Mother's Love And Perseverance That Took Her Son From Poverty - A Review

I am inspired to write my Review because of an article I read in the Jamaica Observer online dated June 2014 http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/regional/A-mother-s-pride_16983529

This article was headlined Mom Thanks God as son overcomes poverty to earn PhD at age 25.

“Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” – Joshua J. Marine

Angelita Kelly at the tender age of 17 was abandoned by the father of her child who was only one month old.  She exhibited the strength and discipline,  digging  deep within herself  finding  honest independent ways to keep and maintain her son in good health, and ensuring that he had a good education.  She did what she had to do and succeeded.

Angelita's  story is one of fortitude and perseverance. She had but one focus - that of ensuring that her son had a good education and she laid the foundation for him to achieve.

A wake up warning  from his mother showing the alternative to succeeding did not sit well with him and so he got busy being the best he could be.

Angelita made her choice - the conscious decision to not have another child because she knew she could not afford  another mouth to feed.

Her hard work  paid off as her son,  exceeded  her  expectations to become one of the youngest , if not the youngest, at the University of the West Indies (UWI) to receive a doctorate in chemistry by age 25 - Dr. Nelson.

His Notable  achievements

1. Dr Nelson, it is reported, is the first to complete both an MPhil and a PhD in three-and-a-half years

2. He claimed from a field of 275 worldwide applicants one of the five doctoral fellowships at Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, to begin his studies this August.

3.  He presented a paper  in August 2010 on the Phase Behaviours of Zinc Carboxylates at a (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) IUPAC-sponsored MAM 10 conference

4. He gave a presentation on the Molecular and Lattice Structures of Sodium(I) Carboxylates at the American Chemical Society Conference in Philadelphia in August 2012.

6. His doctoral thesis, titled The Molecular Packing, Lattice Structures and Thermotropic Phase Behaviours of the Homologous Series of Silver, Sodium and Potassium n-Alkanoates, examines compounds used to make bathing soaps and detergents, which form liquid crystals with the application of heat and are also applicable in liquid crystal display (LCD) devices -
 awarded on October 25, 2013

7. Published in seven international journals, including Journal of Molecular Structure, Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, Dalton Transactions and International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

I congratulate and feel nothing but great admiration for Angelita Kelly and her son Dr. Nelson. If there was ever an example of the results of  a Mother's love perseverance and endurance - this is it!

And it comes to mind - Where is the father and what must he feeling right about now having abandoned his child?
