Your health and you - Do You understand the importance of fiber in maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle?

Adequate fiber in your diet is one of the ways to fight ill health. If you include fiber in your diet you will not easily become a victim to a number of lifestyles diseases.

Fiber is found in the indigestible parts of plants that remains relatively unchanged in your system as it passes through the stomach and intestines.
Ensuring enough Fiber is in your diet serves as a preventative to ill health, assisting in the control of weight gain because it makes you feel full and you therefore tend to consume less.

The Importance of Fiber is in the regulating of your digestive system.

Types And Sources Of Fiber

There are two types of fiber - Soluble and Insoluble.
 Some good sources of insoluble fiber are whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables. Insoluble fiber contains cellulose, which help your bowel to pass food, thereby preventing constipation.

 Some examples of insoluble fibers are :

a) Beans - like kidney beans, black eyed peas

b) Chickpeas (channa), and lentils are loaded with fibre, high in protein and low in fat.

c) Wholegrain and wholemeal, edible seeds,

brown or wholegrain rice, and oats - a great source of fibre.

d) Nuts - Those with the most fiber are Almonds, pecans, and walnuts.

e) Fruits with edible seeds

Pectin found in soluble fiber like the skin of apples also help to prevent constipation.

Soluble fiber-containing gums and pectin, lowers cholesterol, controls blood sugar, and is found in all fruits and vegetables.

Papaya is high in soluble fiber and is important for normal bowel movement. As well as containing enzymes that help digestion Papaya is a rich source of Vitamin C and beta-carotene. 

Some other sources of soluble fiber are citrus, legumes, barley, oats, strawberries and pears.

Fiber is an important ingredient in maintaining a healthy balanced diet so you should ensure that your daily intake of high levels of fiber is maintained to ensure a healthy lifestyle
