Distraction Junkie
I found this old piece from when I had decided to take control of my life over 15 years ago. I found it entertaining and still relevant, so I thought i would share in hopes that it will reach those that need to see it. You are not alone.

"Hi. my name is Todd. And I'm a recovering distraction junkie."

Since having decided to work from home, I have allowed much of my time and energy to be consumed by phone calls, text messages, unorganized and unproductive computer time....

It's an easy thing to get addicted to - escapism by way of distraction. Feeling powerless most of the time, it became a way of life (not actually 'living').

Recently I found my purpose, yet still lacked passion and direction (I'll explain later how that is actually possible, more common than people think, and how to Power your way through it!).

With the help and love of several special friends, many of whom where recently new stay at home moms, I was finally able to gain enough insight into what was happening, and picked up some incredibly healthy tools for using this "gift" instead of continuing to be a slave to the powerlessness of it.

Some of what it took, was a change of schedule due to a massive shift of priorities. A complete overhaul in how I spent my time and energy. (This was a process of re-discovering and re-membering of self love and self care. More on this later.)

Now that my kids are in school, it allows for some major shifts in how I move in my world.... So, without further excuses, I mapped out a plan of action. Now, I'm still testing things out and making revisions here and there. It's only been a couple of weeks, so there are a few things that work extremely well, and a few that need a bit more trial and error. I am weeding out the distractions, while adding back in the healthy self-care that had been lacking for some time.

How to focus in the Age of Distraction.
(start in the CENTER and read through each branch).
This is called a "mind map" and ironically, it may
look cluttered and distracting but take your time
and actually read through it. It's great information!

No photo description available.

*Tim Ferriss says in the 4HWW
"You simply can't be available to other people at their whim and on their terms all day long and expect to be able to (a) focus on getting the important things done or (b) ultimately free up your schedule for non-work activities."

Peace AND Quiet, not Peace OR Quiet. For me, the weekend is my time to power down a bit, spend some quality and quantity time with my loves, and amp up my self care. I figure they are in school all week, which allows me to offer my complete focus to creating in my business world and indulge in my personal relationships, so it's only fair that the weekend belongs to them.

As of 8am (9am at the latest) on both Saturday and Sunday, the phone goes upstairs and in my room. No calls and no texts to distract me. I've even gone so far as to power it down completely. As for the computer - I have obviously posted a ton today ;) though they have all been incredibly quick posts (divinely inspired, which allowed for maximum flow), and my kids were otherwise engaged in activities that they did not want me involved in - well, not at first. :)

(Even now, as I'm typing this, they are in the garden tub in my bathroom, we are playing music and singing together!)

What I have found the past 2 weekends with this new schedule, as well as the one I have for answering the phone and email during the week, is that my energy has changed in some pretty powerful ways. My focus is AMAZING and I have produced more content than ever. My kids are also happier (for the most part) to have my attention as well. It's a sweet thing.

As mentioned before, I will continue to revise as necessary. If anyone is out there with a master plan that is working, I welcome any suggestions!

And I'll leave it here, since I am about to grab my camera and take some cute pics....
